Proposition 12: Veterans’ Bond Act of 2008

Proposition 12 will appear on the November 4, 2008 ballot in California. It is also known as theVeterans’ Bond Act of 2008. The measure was legislatively-referred to the ballot in Senate Bill 1572. The primary sponsor of SB 1572 was Senator Mark Wyland, R-Carlsbad. The vote to place the measure on the ballot was passed unanimously in both the California state senate (39-0) and assembly (75-0).
If the ballot proposition passes in November, it authorizes issuance of $900 million in bonds to create a fund that assist veterans who are purchasing farms, homes and mobile home properties.

I would have to say yes to this proposition. Although the bond is worth $900 million, it will help the veterans so much. It is time that the veterans deserve better. There are already veterans that are on a CalVet loan. The CalVet loan program was established in November 7, 1922 The loan is repaid and the taxpayers wouldn’t have to pay a cent for it. If this proposition does pass, then the veterans who were in war with Iraq, Afghanistan or Kuwait would be eligible for the CalVet loan with more than 420,000 others that are already on the CalVet program. This loan leads to many housing industry-related jobs and that would mean gaining more, more money in payrolls. My grandpa is a war veteran when he was serving in his country and this proposition would really help him out. He has been living in my aunt’s house for a really long time. Of course money would be an issue when buying a house, but with the help of prop 12, then he can be able to buy a house, with the help of my family, with no expense from taxpayers.
I would have to agree with Matt and vote yes on this propostion. This propositon helps out veterans that went to fight for our country, so when they come back home they will have a financial standings on the remainder of their life. A lot of veterans go out in war at a young age and not having a strong foundation on life itself or never had an experience of working a job before they left off to war. So therefore, all the veterans that have returned and want to start their life have no foundation money and is forced to live with family memebers are even go on welfare. I feel this is not fair because of they fought for our country. Even though $900 million is a lot of money, we still need to think about how much money we are spending on war itself. The more we are spending on war, the more the veterans policy on money is going to increase; due to more people in war and them becoming veterans. I don’t anyone personally that is a veteran, so I really don’t know their situation on life, but I coulldnt imagine my grandfather being a veteran with no financial support from the gov’t he was fighting for. So yes, I would vote towards helping veterans out, things would be better for them and their families.
I would vote yes on Prop 12. Those who are serving our country deserve help to buy a house. You only make so much being in the armed forces so it would only be fair to have a fair chance in buying a house. The loans are also repaid, at no expense to the tax payers. This bill has to be good, its passed 26 times already.
Proposition 12 is a very good idea with great intentions, but i would not vote for this prop to pass because of the money issue. A great point was mentioned about how most soldiers are young and don’t really have a strong foundation on life or work experience other than war, but the thing is that there really isn’t enough funding to support this proposition. Yes it is true some ex soldiers have trouble getting back on their feet, but they are soldiers they are tough and they need to jump back on their feet cause if is a war too and they need to fight the battle.
I personally know someone has gone through two wars and had no trouble what so ever to come back and get back on the horse. Yes there was trauma there, but I mean he went through to of America’s biggest wars. Yes it would have been nice to have a hand in re-building his life along with his family but he was a man did it with no hand outs and he succeeded. I’m not saying that this proposition is the worst one ever proposed although it is a bad idea. The biggest issue I am facing is the fact that there is going to be this whole other account for only veterans of a war when there is huge money crisis going on at the same time.
Yes this prop would help the veterans and their family, but what about the other millions of people that aren’t veterans. Why don’t they get any help? Because they didn’t go into a war, or because they wanted to have a different life that doesn’t involve guns. All in all it sounds good but if all the information is put on the table and really examined it could possibly damage our economy even more.
In my opinion proposition 12 would be a great idea. It serves the purpose of helping those who have fought for our country. Even though the proposition would help those who have never even seen the front lines or never even left the country, they were still willing to join the military and serve for us. I don’t think they had any say in whether or not they were going to be shipped over seas. I feel bad when I see homeless people who are begging on the streets claiming they are American veterans. Even if they aren’t and are just posing as one, the thought of someone who has fought for our country and risked they’re lives living on the streets is just horrible. They deserve better than that. If I were a neglected veteran, I would regret everything I had ever done for the country. If they just neglect those who have risked everything for them, what is the point in risking your life? Showing the veterans that we care and helping them out with proposition 12 would show more people that we are thankful for what they have done for us. Helping with funds is probably the best way to show our gratitude. I don’t personally know any veterans of war but I think they should be higher up on our priority list. They at least have served a purpose in the world. In my opinion, they should be helping out veterans before they deal with people on welfare. Taxpayer’s money will not be used for this proposition. In the last 26 Veterans’ Bond Acts, there have never been any costs to the taxpayers; the loans are repaid by the loan owners. Overall, I think you should vote yes on this proposition.
Een though I don’t think right now is the time to be wasting that amount of money because of everything that is happening right now and instead that money should go more towards education because of the budget cuts that is giving students a harder time to attend college and longer time to graduate…
i would vote yess on this proposition.
I respect all the veterans out there for fightning for us and representing our country so I think they do deserve that. It takes a lot of courage as a human being to go and fight in combat risking your life and the possibility to see your family again. i wish that there wasn’t any kind of war so this decision wouldn’t have to be made and there wouldn’t be any wars. Veterans should get the privilege to get this because leaving to another country to fight takes a lot of strength because you are leaving everything behind and has a gift in return for all the help they should get this proposition passed so that way we can show how much we are thankful for what they have done and how proud we are of them too.
I would vote yes on Prop 12.
People who fight in wars and serve the country often do not have the time and ability to invest and purchase a place to live.
It doesnt seem logical for somebody to rsk their life for so many people and not even get a home to live in.
Even though the prpo provides money for veterans who never leave home or fight, its the thought that counts. Everyone of them serves the US some way or another.
I would definitely vote yes on proposition 12. The soldiers who fought in all the wars that we have had should be taken care of properly considering everything that they have done for our country. Just imagine how many soldiers are hurt when they come back from the war and need some help to live. Some soldiers are going to need money and housing because some of them might not even have a family to go back home to and they will benefit from the 900 million dollars that this proposition will grant them. An opposition to this proposition is “Possibly resulting in unavailable funds for those who actually served in harms way”. Maybe that might be the case but if the proposition isn’t passed, then that means the people who did serve time in harms way aren’t going to benefit at all. This proposition is also good because the loan for the 900 million dollars doesn’t come from tax payers so it won’t affect the American people all too much. Vote yes on proposition 12.
Well after looking at all the other bills i decided that this one is actually the one i feel strongly about.
I would yes on prop 12.
i think it is very important that we take care of our veterans.
Even though it is a lot of money i think it is a better way to spend it then on something we dont need vitally at the moment. It is a money spent wise and i myself wouldn’t mind my tax money going towards that. Also, of course, they are our veterans. we are suppose to take care of them. we are suppose to put they needs as one of the priorities. There are a lot of neglected veterans out there, who did not even know what to do after the war or just did not know how. it is our responsibility to give back to them just as they have been giving us our safety and freedom.
yes on prop 12!!!
from what i under stand, If the ballot proposition passes in November, it authorizes issuance of $900 million in bonds to create a fund that assist veterans who are purchasing farms, homes and mobile home properties. It would be a nice gesture to help the elderly, never the less the veterans that severed in the military who fought for our country, but 900 million dollars seems like alot of money to give tot he veterans to achieve the homeownership dream. This prop states the loans will be paid back and right now we are in a crisis, persisly because of loans , so i would have to say no prop 12.
I would vote yes on proposition 12. I Think that veterans deserve this bond of 900 million so that they can start there life’s and so they can be able to shelter there families. Veterans at war have done so much for our country and risked there lives that i think they deserve something in return. This bond would help millions of soldiers and help than get a head start for the remainder of there life’s.
I would say yes on Prop 12, because I think this prop would really benefit the veterans. I think this is a good idea, because this gives them assistance with house buying and property ownership. Since they fought hard for our country, I think we should give them something in return. I know that the prop includes everyone who served during a time of war; maybe they didn’t really do anything. But they still risk their lives, families, and other things that are important to them to be in the front line. So wouldn’t it be fair and nice to help them out a little. I know $900 million is a lot, but if we all work together then we can all help.
I would have to vote yes on Prop 12, yes i see where the whole money issues with todays economy can come into play with the voters decision, but i feel that this is a terrific way to continue and honor our veterans. Sometimes we just need to stop being so uptight and for once think about others and find ways we can give back and there is no other way that i can think that is better to give the veternas and their families a place to call home.
Yes on Prop 12
I would vote yes on proposition 12 I think that the veterans deserve it. I mean they did there part for our counrty so we should give back and give and vote yes on proposition even though it is going to cost 900 million . I think that its a small price to pay considering who it is for and they sure earn it too. The bond is going to help veterans create a fund that will help them when they are purchasing a farm, homes ans mobile home properties. I think thats its a great idea and we should vote yes.
Proposition 12
I would vote yes on prop 12 because I think veterans need more help in living there lives. Because when a lot of them come back from the war they have nothing and a high percentage become homeless. Or a lot of them come back with physical and mental disabilities. So I just don’t think we should help them get homes but have like free health care for them. I think we should really help them out because they were the ones that fought for our country, and if it wouldn’t of been for them our country would be crappy. So helping them get homes is a very good idea and prop 12 has my vote.
I would defintle vote yes on Prop 12. This would ensure a financial safety net for our veterans. Everything that had to endure in some part of ther life dinies our history. They helped us, now its oue time to help them. This wouls give money to familes and veterans to help them basically start a new life. this peop is very important. Taking care of oue veterans is just one way of showing our respect to them. SO Prop has my support 100%.
If i were 18, i would vote yes on Prop 12. The veterans did alot for our country. and just throwing that program out the window just wouldnt be far for them. They fought for the us so i think the us owe these in some kind of way. i think people should stop thinking about them seleves some times and lend a helping help, even in the money issue the us is in now. 900million is a small price to pay, compared to what they been though. so yes on Prop 12.
sharing is caring.
I would vote No on Prop 12. Mainly, because it includes the word BOND, I mean yes, it may sound all good. I’m totally for helping our veterans out, but bond, means that the money is borrowed. We can’t afford to keep borrowing money for everything. Plus, there are already federal laws in place to help veterans. It would be extremely nice to add to that in California, but to be completely honest, I believe that is the communities job to take care of our veterans. I’ve already some initiative taken with certain organizations like AMVETS, who sell used items to help American veterans. These people fought for us, to protect us, we should be the ones to honor them. Why rely on the government to do everything, when we know that half the time, they don’t even do it the way we want it done. The families, friends, and community of these veterans should pull together to help provide for them and their families. Wouldn’t that be more patriotic than borrowing money to fix our problems?
I would vote yes on prop twelve. The reason i choose this is because there are countless veterans who i see everyday on the streets who are homeless. Its almost a given that we should give back after all these men coming home might have no where to go if they dont have any familiy. With this prop they’d be able to get a start and rebuild there life if they are coming back to nothing. My grandfather served in the airfore during world war two. A bill like this would have made him starting his life over a lot earlyer.
so..yes on twelve!
I agree with most of what Prop 12 proposes and i think it is a fitting for our veterans to receive help. But i don’t fully agree with everything in this prop. Sure every veteran should have the chance to benefit from this, but it won’t happen. Veterans who have never set foot on combat zones will get the benefits while some of the ones who risked their lives will be left with nothing. I would vote no on prop 12, and propose to have it rewritten so that only veterans eligible will be the ones who were actually in danger. Yes i believe that all veterans deserve the benefits from this prop, but who would you give the money to? The guy with the desk job or the soldier who held his own on foreign soil for months at a time?
I would have to say no on proposition 12. I dont have anything against veterans or people who are currently serving the military. I believe that everyone has the home ownership dream, the average joe, the hard worker, the young adults. I dont think that we should take part in any bonds especially right now. We are deeply in debt and i dont think that adding to this debt will be any help to anyone. In my opinion i dont have any family thats gonna serve or has served the military. I myself cannot even join becauase of health issues. So really this proposition would not help me in any way. If anything it would make it harder for me in the future to own a house. I disagree with this prop, but maybe in a better future this could work. Maybe when we’re not in such a financial hole.
I defintle vote yes on Prop 12. This would ensure a financial safety for our veterans. Everything that had to endure in some part of ther life dinies our history. They helped us, now its oue time to help them. This will give money to familes and veterans to help them start a new life. this is very important. Taking care of oue veterans is just one way of showing our respect to them. Prop has my support
I would vote yes on prop 12 even though we are in a deficit. I think as veterans they deserve a chance to get a house especially that it’s hard to get homes in are economy right now so they deserve the extra help. The only problem I have with the bill is that it doesn’t only restrict the benifits to only soldiers who have served in war because if the bill is passed every person who served in the military during time of war are able to recieve help I think that soldiers who have served in the war deserve more help because if everyone gets help they can run out of money to give to people who actually served in the war.
If you are voting I say you should put no. it is not fair that they could get homes or farms at a lower price or to provide them with it. Plus it is a lot of money just thrown away. If they serve the country that’s good for them and I guess us. I think it’s not even supposed to be in the voting ballet because if they went to war I think they shouldn’t even come back because in my religion it is a sin to take a life away from a human being or a living thing. So I say vote no on it and they could find jobs or let the government help them look for jobs. Make the veterans work their ass off just like we do in life.
Most of you favored passing this proposition. I voted against this bond, because I didn’t like how loose the expectations were with regard to how you qualify. I would like to see more specific requirements to reduce the amount of money we are borrowing.
We should help the veterans buy homes, because we have so many empty homes for them to buy. But we should not open it up to just about every military member.
