4 day workweek for schoolsI am glad to hear the discussion starting again.  I emailed Jack O’Connell, the California Superintendent of Education, and he said the following: There are several districts that have specific legislative authority to reduce their minutes and days requirements and operate four-day school weeks, pursuant to California Education Code (EC) 37700. You may view the text of the EC on the California Law Web page at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html (Outside Source).

The few districts that use this authority receive a reduced rate of apportionment. There are also strict requirements-primarily meeting its Academic Performance Index (API) growth target or permanently losing the four-day week authority. The last group of districts to get the four-day week authority received it because they were small districts affected by the first San Diego fires. The other districts are primarily very small and have remote locations.

If you have any questions regarding the four-day school week, please contact Kim Clement, Consultant, School Fiscal Services DIvision, at 916-327-0857 or by e-mail at kclement@cde.ca.gov.  JACK O’CONNELLState Superintendent of Public InstructionMore or less, he did not sound too interested.
