On this week’s “A Day in the Work Life,” we listen in with a sound effects guy who adds a dash of audio magic to the movies.

This guy makes sound effects as a profession. He invests money out of his own pocket, so its more than a career to him as well as an unstructured routine he follows. This guy even got to paid to record the sound of F-18′s, which has to be cool to do, at his distance perhaps a little unsafe though. I like how he’s made a career out of it, though its a very unlikely one. Not the kind most at High School aspire to do. He gets around in it too, as far as travel. He had a lot of stories based on just recordings and the settings he was involved in. But overall he loves his work, which counts the most and is rare these days.
My Uncle creates props for Warner Bros., he created settings for War of the Worlds, Batman, Constantine, Pirates of the Carribean, and also for some other independent films. I know he loves his job, because its not a normal routine for him either. He has to travel a lot, but on the plus side he gets autographs and does what he loves to do. Create props.
If only we were all so lucky as to get a job this spontaneous and loveable. I mean, this guy doesn’t sound like he gets bored at his job, which is a lot more than most of us can say. I think it’s amazing that he can wake up not knowing what the day holds for him and that he gets to travel around the world exploring and recording sounds. Not only does this job entail a great deal of creativity, but it actually requires a passion and thought. This guy gets paid to do something he loves. I’m sure many of us would love a job like a sound recorder, one because it sounds easy and two because you’re getting paid to travel and record sounds that stand out to you. I’m sure that this job is not as easy as most perceive, but it sounds like it’d be really fun. It’d be amazing if we could all say we love what we do for a living…. and actually mean it.
