Can we keep up?  How will our lives look in 25 years?  Since I have graduated high school, there has many so many new things to see or have.  It is hard to imagine a world where we actually go backwards in time.  However, the idea things will slow down is not a far fetched view, particularly with the slowing down of our economy.  I hope it is only temporary though.

When you think of the future, what kind of technological developments do you expect or hope to see?  What problems will they solve?  What problems will arise because of this new technological tool?

PITTSBURGH – People will increasingly interact with computers using speech or touch screens rather than keyboards, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said.

“It’s one of the big bets we’re making,” he said during the final stop of a farewell tour before he withdraws from the company’s daily operations in July.

In five years, Microsoft expects more Internet searches to be done through speech than through typing on a keyboard, Gates told about 1,200 students and faculty members Thursday at Carnegie Mellon University.

Gates also said the software that is proliferating in various branches of science, including biology and astronomy must become even more advanced.

“They’re dealing with so much information that … the need for machine learning to figure out what’s going on with that data is absolutely essential,” he said.

Microsoft is trying to establish ties not only with university computer science departments but also with reseachers in other scientific areas “to help us understand where new inventions are necessary,” Gates said.

I think Gates is headed in the right direction with the Science aspect, but I strongly feel that he’s making a very sloppy bet on voice based computer usage. If you really think about it, having a keyboard allows you to NOT speak directly. It brings about a very private form of conversation. You can have a conversation with several people at the same time online, while nobody in the room even knows it. I think Gates’ bet will fall short in that category.

Computers will get smaller, faster, and cheaper, but I don’t think technology will slow down much. We’ll keep moving along

New inventions… how about a DNA based computer?
    Transformers anyone?

Computers and technology are becoming more and more complex, and to keep up with this advancement there is a need for a new human computer interface. Currently visual interfacing is the closest to what I in-vision the perfect interface. A visual interface that is somewhat like a virtual reality touch based system. Like the advancements of the touch-based iPhone, the new virtual interface will have to be ergonomic (the form and movements of the human body) and logic based. However 25 years into the future I see us completely interfaced with machines. A thought based interface, because with the rapid advance in technology the only limit I see to human-dependent systems is the speed of though.

I do think computers and technology will get more and more advanced with time, I don’t see it slowing down much. But I don’t see how speech screens will work very well. If youre sending an email does that mean you’ll have to dictate every word to it? And for people with accents, will the computers understand it? Will it do it for every language? I see these things probably working for science. But what about household computers? I don’t see how that will be very convenient. Especially for those who multitask on the computer such as if someone is on various websites having to type in both windows, or if someone is having mutiple conversations, it might get a bit hectic, and take more time than it would if we would just type it. Like if right now I didn’t have a keyboard, I’d figure it would take longer for me to dictate this to the computer and it record it accurately. Even with touch screens, they’re convenient for some things, but for multiple conversations I don’t know how well they would work, but touch screens would have more of a chance of being accurate than speech screens.

I see technology become more and more advance. Unlike my peers, I can see speech screens coming into use. Some will see the keyboard and mouse as an unuseful object. It is filled with germs and would take too much time. The speech screens will save time and effort, which is what everyone wants. Society is always looking towards getting an appliance that saves theur time and effort. So why wouldn’t people want to use a speech screen instead of a keyboard and mouse?
However as technology advances, society becomes less reliable to think for themselves. We have calculators to do math for us. We have the internet to do so many things for us. We have citation websites to site a source for us. Some can be nowhere without their cell phones (im guilty oif that). Society will one day rely too much on technology. It could be that we need technology to live.
I personally do not believe that new technology is ever necessary. It could be beneficial, but never necessary. You can always do things the old fashion way. However the majority of society thinks it is better to do things more accurate and faster. It’s how we think. This is why technology will always advance higher and higher.

wow, keyboardless computers huh? that would certainly be a favor to people like me who arent that good at typing lol (well, maybe i am better than i think, who knows or cares) but i dont think that there will be speech recognition interfaces in the next 25 years. part of that is because, like sam said, typing gives you more privicy and thus can allow for more …..intimate conversations and is more convinient than having to have to learn how the computer recognizes (or can recognize) human speech (ie “alternative sex” instead of “alternative specs” in the movie wild hogs). plus we already have speech regognition software and “speek write”, for lack of a better term, capabilities with software, why would we not progress in the next 25 years (on second thought, that may be a stupid question considering how our politicians seem to turn out, but hope springs eternal) on to thought based interfaces, like what buddy said. then again, if the keybord is so ineficcient, then why havent we made alternatives more widly developed and spread now? plus, keybords are really good for a wide variety of things already, so i dont see them going away anytime soon.

  6. 6 Andrew Laffin

They’d better get that voice-recognition technology down PAT before they start marketing keyboardless computers. I’ve seen my mom try to use the bluetooth system in her car, and sometimes it takes her five minutes to get it to do what she wants. How “call home” gets turned into “call Andrew” I have no idea. I realize that it’ll become more exact as time goes on, but still. I don’t want to have to yell at my computer for not working right any more than I do right now.

On a side note, I think it would be interesting to see how voice recognition would affect the use of internet memes (LOL, OMG, etc.). I think it’d be cool if the voice-recognition automatically made laughing noises into LOLOLOLOLOL… based on how long you laughed for. Oh, and how would punctuation work?

I don’t know comma man period That kinda worries me period Oh comma and how would backspacing work question mark Would you just say quotation mark back quotation mark or quotation mark delete quotation mark comma or would that just make the computer type in the word you said question mark

I think if this is the future they’d better make damn sure that problems like this get fixed.

  7. 7 Briana Ramirez

Well first of all I do believe that technology will advance not necessarily in a fast way because of the downward economy. I feel that keyboardless computers are not that far away in our time. Bill gates is taking this situation into a very broad expansion because he wants to incorporate different branches of science into the new technology. I believe that internet softwares like microsoft being incorporated into speech will expand different languages in our cultures and will make us much more aware of our soroundings. For example we can see that the through the internet we are able to talk to people from all over the world. It might be even better to communicate with these people just through speech. They should also consider that touch screens will also be a virtual part of the new technology that is to come. I have to say that all these things sound very exciting hopefully there wont be any consequences from this new technology.

  8. 8 Jonathan Rodriguez

I do believe that things will be very different not too long from now. Just by looking back a few years ago, like stated, we can see the drastic changes that technology has undergone. It’s quite amazing and scary to think about at the same time. Can technology become to advance? At what point have we gone too far? Can we go too far? Or is it the course that humanity must take? The human population thrives in search of new thigns to better ones life, but in reality how better are we with these new advances? Are we just complicating our lives instead of making them simpler?

Voice interaction with a computer? I don’t want to tell a computer what I’m searching for. I think it would piss me off when it won’t understand what I’m talking about. I like the keyboard. It allows you to see something. Let’s say Microsoft Word was changed so that you can speak to the computer and it would write everything. In theory and thought that sounds cool, but is it?

Look on the bright side.. carapltunnel would reduce amongst people.

  9. 9 Grace T

i really think that it is a good idea. we all know that technology is going to change sooner or later. nothing will reamain the same. everyday, we are faced witth new technology that we all haveto learn about. it might be a good idea to have a voice activated computer, that would understand what we need and what we had said.
also, things like these could have a problem afterwads. we might have problems, when the computer doesnt understand what we have said or it might freeze on us. it might also be slower than what we normally would be typing. many words have different pronunciations or it might mean something else in a different language. i really have to agree with laffin, how are the punctuation marks going to work on this thing. how is the computer going to distinguish an actual word for a punctuation? these might some thimgs that Gates should consider before making his keyboardless computers..

Each new generation has had their share of new technology that has in a way, defined that era. In the past, a few advancements have defined each era, but currently, it seems that a never ending stream of new gadgets and technological advancements are htiting our society every 3 months.
I think its pretty cool to see that voice activated technologies are advancing, because most of my expeirience with any voice activated things has been poor and takes a few tried for it to work. If in the next 5 years, voice activated technology will be sophistocated enough to recognize voice well enough to carry out web searches, I can only imagine how everything else will advance.
In the future, I don’t think there will be any flying cars on any mass production scale, beacuse of the expense involved as well as the lack of traffic laws that will be able to be enforced. Cars that fly would not be on a level plane, such as a road, so there wouldnt be any way to control the traffic flow.
I do think that computers will continue to get smaller and smaller and do more and more for us. Small hosuehold robots will begin to complete many of our daily tasks. Video games will become more life-like and new way sof playing them will be developed.
With all these advancements in things thta make our lives easier, people will become lazier and lazier, and many jobs will eventually be lost. Most people will probably be working in factories making all these new gadgets, unless robots are making them leaving everyone without a job.
There are pros and cons to all the new technological advancements that are to come and they have to be considered when they are invented.

  11. 11 Samantha O.

I do beleieve technology will keep advancing, but I think we need to limit on the amount used based on electricity because i mean just look at gas right now how bad it is and electricity isn’t that far behind being that it is a necessary resource!!! On top of that i think by continuously advancing such technology can have its benefts but once you do/have too much of something it is never good. I think we should pretty much stay where we at and focus on how to improve our natural resources and environment so we can even look forward to a better/brighter future. There are so many other things to be focusing on right now then trying to improve our technology because we are just introducing more problems, because it may benefit with something at that moment but usually comes out with negatives later and who knows one time it just may be too late. As for directly speaking and no keyboard is pointless, because that would only make a lot more people lazy. Some schools make computer skills a requirement to graduate and what would they do if they advance. Not make it a requirement or test them on their speaking skills?! okay that sounds like a bright idea!!! (sarcastic)but yea that is an example of doing too much because im pretty sure once it does come out a lot more downfalls will come with it.

  12. 12 alexa m.

This guy, BILL. He has taken the use of technology and it’s powers to very usefull measure. We are alwayse advanceing in life wheather we like it or not. there is no going back, just to new and extream forwards. we may slow down due to the economy, but our minds will set us free. (: Saying our technology still will come forwards too.
There is a lot to consider with having a voice with computer activity. I think it is good in terms of something new and very advanced but i don’t think it will be a great take on in computers. The only way i see it happening is if your in a room, with your computor of course, then in order to say anything to it, the room must be completly quiet because it can only render what you are saying and no other sounds, not to mention we would have to say it very properly. I dont know if you have ever tried to see what movies are playign through the phone, but you basically you have to speak to a machine. Any little sound or extra pernunsiation throws the machine off and tells you, “what did you say, can you repet.” Surely they will have better technology in the future with this. but i think they should stick to only applying that to robots. Advancing there speaking and comunication with us.
I like typing and i agree with what sam had said in the very begingin, “private conversation”.

  13. 13 Hans N

Technology will continue to advance at a rapid pace as it has in the past decade. However, I am not to sure Microsoft will be able to profect this technology in the next 5 years. All the programing that would go into something like that as well as the millions of hours to prefect it, just insane. Would they only sell it to people who spoke english? If they had to add a varity of languages to this computer would be a great chore. Also many people would still prefer to have a keyboard over a mic. Mic’s do not take into account punctuation, or what if someone studers.

  14. 14 Nicole Skinner

Technology is going to keep on growing no mattter how much people agree or disagree with it. Just since I can remember technology has advanced so much, I cant imagine what our world will be like, technology wise, in a few years let alone a decade or two. When i think of the future i imagine more computers that are faster and more complex, basically what you see in those movies with super computers and robots and flying cars and everything (Jetsons!!) thats how i see the future. ok it may be far fetched but i think if we dive all these computer wizards just more time they will come up with something that will make our technology now, that we think is so cool, practically obsolete. The problems that having faster and better technology will solve is that we can grow more i think. Instead of having everyone learn the basis’ before they can learn something new, we will have these computers that can just do it for us, making it so people can grow more and at a faster pace. The problems with all this technology is that its probably going to make people lose jobs or have less to do, and plus i dont think people are going to really take to all this new stuff. Thats what i think about the new technology and the advancements that are and are going to take place with it.

This is kind of an interesting topic. As I read through it I immediatly thought that this was a dumb idea. Why? A few reasons, typing is easy, granted it may be somewhat time consuming but there really isnt any flaws with typing thanks to the backspace button and the fact that we are the ones typing, I mean even blind people have the ability to type, so it aint that hard. Secondly if Gates goes to a voice based computer there are too many glitches, it is already this way with anything that is based on voice recognition, it may get it right a lot of the time but it also gets it wrong many times. Third, it seems that if Gates was to go to a computer that is voice based it would be much more costly to create and because of that it would be more costly for the consumers to purchase therefore lowering the demand for these computers and probably having Bill losing money. My last, but kind of simplest point, is how would u go back and erase a mistake if it was based on voice recognition, I think it would be kind of annoying. To have to correct the mistakes because would you have to say “Backspace three letters, or backspace, backspace, backspace” just to fix a mistake? And what about the fact that there are homophones in the English language? You know, like there, their, and they’re? How is the computer gonna get that right? and what about slang? i think it would b too much pointless work to do all of this, and to top it all of its unnecessary.

I love technology and I enjoy using some of the new technology that comes out, but sometimes i think its nice to keep it simple. There are some things that humans have to do themselves…I mean the more we make technology do for us the less we have to do, true, but also the less we know how to do. I mean is using a pencil really that difficult, is pressing buttons really that difficult, is walking really that difficult? I dont think so, and its sad to me that we are getting to the point where technology is overtaking our lives and what we do in them, and its really a sad sight. It seems like everything that has gotten to this point is diminishing, I mean the first humans used what they had and were extremely resourceful and fended for themselves in their lives, and they had so much more less helping them out, so we dont have it that bad off. The laziness of man never ends does it? First men force other men to do tons of things for them, by using slavery, and well if man cant have slaves what’s the next best thing? Technology? technology is like our new slave, we can make it do anything for us because it has no power, what happens when we take it too far and technology evolves too much, and then rebels against us humans? RIDICULOUS???please!! thats probably the exact same thing people were thinking when they had slaves, they probably never thought that slaves would be able to get out of it, but they did, I am not one to doubt things from happenin because anything that can be imagined can become a reality.

Technology is great, but lets not become too dependent on it, and believe me society as a whole is becoming too dependent on it. I would like to see more people doing things for themselves and not using technology if at all possible, and no longer having to type? thats just odd, typing is not difficult and to prove that I typed this extremely long rant/response to this, see typing isnt that tough.

I proposed that we go to the flow and we slow down..
    just my two cents

  16. 16 Lily M.

It’s no secret that technology continues to advance, whether we like it or not. Inventors will keep on inventing and so on. But, I can see the advantages to better machines for the science part of the world. As for keyboard-less computers, it’s kind of hard to see the point. Many of us learn to type or can type at a fast rate. Saying what we’re thinking out loud could be completely embarrassing.

I hope to see medical and science related technological advances in the future. I’m sure there will be. This might save lives and maybe even the planet.

The only thing I worry about is that technology will be come everything to us and we, as humans will no longer do anything with our lives. We already have technology that does stuff for us. It would be a shame if we became lazy blobs because of advancing technology. :P

  17. 17 Chelsea

Technology will go on. It will advance at it always has, and although there may be economic dips at which point technology may not be at its highest demand, but this does not mean that the advancements won’t continue to come. I think that it’s really important that we put some focus in the scientific technological advancements, because they will be necessary in the near future.

As for the keyboard-less computer, we already have programs that are voice activated and many of them are much more complicated and difficult to work. Already the “speak write” programs misinterpret words and can not differentiate between homophones. I think that before we start speculating on how great this new technology will become, we have to perfect what’s already been created. I think that whether it’s a computer program, blue tooth, or the new sync voice command audio system we need to figure out how we can make the voice recognition more accurate.

Really I think that computers and such technologies will begin to take a more interactive turn and create more virtual programs. I think that these technologies will attempt to gain a more interactive and engaged audience. These technologies will be created to give people a more personal and vivid experience- they will be more “involved”. I think that technological process is necessary, but I also think that it can be dangerous in that it will create generations to come that will be so “involved” in these technologies that they will be sucked away from reality and much too dependant on the technology available to them.

  18. 18 Anthony Sarzo

Technology is getting better and better every minute. I see technology in the future solving all sorts of health problems through new treatments and new cures. Bill gates has a good point on how technology will help people research for college and other things. I don’t like how he wants the computer to become voice activated. If we spell we have to speak the word or the website. The touch screen I don’t mind becaue there are certain things the hand can do versus what a mouse can do. You can design things a lot better. Technology is a great thing, but there are always going to be kinks that have to be worked out. That’s with anything.

  19. 19 Damien-West

this is actually pretty cool. it seems like the world of technology its becoming more and more like that of a science fiction book/movie. when i think of the future, i can see a world that is solely based and run by computers; computers that can do much more than just do what theyre programmed to do. if we can make a computer that can recognize speech, then a DNA based computer, like sam mentioned, doesnt seem so farfetched. i could see it now. the world would be in awe and amazement when a computer that analyzes, reasons, and learns is put to control our lives, keeping us safe. but whats stopping it from realizing that we, the human race, are the biggest threat to eachother and the rest of the natural world? that shit would kill us all! so instead of making a real fancy computer, why not try and invent technology that would help solve our energy crisis? what about developing anti-matter in larger quantities? It is the most powerful substance known, yielding 100% efficiency, where as nuclear power only has a mere 1%. They say that a single drop of this stuff could power NYC for an entire day. They only problem is that it is the most unstable substance, reacting with absolutly everything. why not find a way to produce and store more of this stuff? instead of a keyboard free computer, i think technology needs to help out with some, more serious, issues.

  20. 20 Robert Ovcharenko

Yes it is true that we are becoming more technological, and the human would enjoy slacking off, which why every one is always ready to not do work, and it is a lot harder to get someone to do work, so if we will be ready to keep up, we’ve been ready, it’s conformity, and many people don’t understand, and don’t see the problems with having less work to do, yes taking a break is one thing, but never doing work is another. so in the future if we, the up coming generation, don’t get in to the “hard working” habit the we will have technology taking our jobs, and maybe even our lives. and the public will have less and less freedom, and only a limited number of people will have true power. machines will be given more and more power, if you read this and consider it to be a piece of fiction, remember this 62 years ago, when the first computer was made no one thought that it would be available to people. And now we have them working in the government, we have them fly to other planets, we have computers think, and reason in space. and soon they will be in our house, they will be over seers of the public, it will be like I-robot, but only the one in charge will be not Viki but a human, or a group of people. technology will not only be every where but it will be in us. that will happen because computers will be put high in power, because it is “safe” and “trust worthy” and someone, or a group will be in charge of the computers to make sure nothing bad happens, and power corrupts it’s like asking a child to keep watch over candy. the child will be too tempted. that is how i see the future, may be not the near future but somewhere upon earth’s time line. computers are the next Dictators.

  21. 21 Virginia V.

The future is unknown, but that doesn’t mean you have no control. Technology is just a step up. It has already revolutionized the way we think and who we are. I see magnets playing a big role in the future for our means of transportation. Call me crazy, but think about it. Already Japan and Germany have tested Magnet Levitation and its already been patented here in America. I can’t say how it’ll be introduced but its here.

    Check it out.

  22. 22 Mike R.

5 years? Really? I mean, technology has continualy developed at a rapid rate. But having fully functional computers without keyboards seems like a stretch. I mean, there are too many flaws to adress before this can work. I expect there to be massive spelling errors or misreadings. I can’t even get the voice recognition on my phone to work, yet alone my computer. I invision sentences that make no sense what so ever. “Eye haunt two stay sum baskets ball tuna heights.” Just like that. I’d love to see some new advancements in technology, but…just not keyboardless computers. I’m sure the people who use computers in classes or in librarys don’t want everyone else to hear what they’re looking up online. Which makes me think, how would people type in passwords or things like that?

So until they find a way to fix these problems, I think keyboards will do JUST FINE.

  23. 23 Rene

I think the future holds many suprises for us new inventions will definitley be one of those suprises. To me the future seems lazy. Humanity is becoming lazy and obessed. We create inventions that help us go anything. Here is a good example Bill Gates having voice activated computers instead of keyboards. How much lazyer can humanity get. In the near future we wouldnt be able to function on our own, we would constantly need technology to satisfy us. Its depressing of just thinking of it. The next thing invented would problably be machines that assisit you in the shower. They would shampoo your hair and clense your body. All the human would have to do is stand there and relax. I find this incredilbly depressing. Technology will soon take over and we would be its slave!

  24. 24 Frenchie C

its is incredibly amazing on how technology has advanced. before we had labtops that were as thick as at least 5inches or more, now they are as thin as a paper.lol im exagerating but still is a huge difference! i can see humans owning robots doing their work and doing their jobs. our technology has advanced so much that now you cant even imagine of whats going to come up next….. next thing you now it there are highways in the sky with flying cars. the downside to technology is that everytime something new comes out something normally always comes out wrong.

  25. 25 David.L

i really can’t say how the future will be. it seems that when people try to imagine what the future will be like, it gets totally blown out of proportion. like in the 50s, when they that that by the year 2000 people would be flying in cars, living in space and underwater, zipping through teleport tubes. nothing like that even happened, except for the treadmill (which george used to walk the dog). either way, i don’t think there’s really a way to imagine what the world will be like, not a right way at least. i don’t think anyone in the 50s would have thought of i-phones, guitar hero, and myspace. the future will probably have something we haven’t even thought of.
i don’t really know if the economy will stop the development of technology, and even if it does i still think that the future will possess some kinds crazy technological break through. i just haven’t the slightest clue on what that could be.

  26. 26 Robert Machado

As history has shown, technology never goes backwards; it merely changes its direction while maintaining a overall forward momentum. With a dropping economy, we find new markets being created for money saving technologies. It is the very idea of limitations in an economy that led to the invention of hybrid motors. As Karl Marx once said “history repeats itself…” In this sense, we are in a constant cycle of progression, just in different areas.

  27. 27 jaleesaah@aim.com

wow! i knew it; technology has tried to surpass us once again.

cons? problems? ha just imagine. just liek mikey mike said if he can`t get the voice recognition on his phone to work at a good quality, just imagine computers with them.

Private things such as social security numbers that had to be said is kinda lame, I sure as heck dont want anyone stealing my identity.

On the flip side i guess there are some positives to this, obiously not needing to buy a keyboard for your computer and voice recgonition and touch screen might be much faster .

but yea i dont think we could ever keep up with technology because constantly there are things that are being added and upgraded for a conveinent and faster way of doign things.

if i had to look into the future i would have to say that we will have many more technological things and we will pay millions of dollars to cop one, only to show that the next day they have upgraded what you have purchased.
    …which sux

  28. 28 Irene-West

It’s a no brainer that technology is advancing more and more as time progresses. But, hmmm is it really a good thing? I think that technology has made people become more lazy because they are dependent on technology for doing the work for them. Touch screen computers & voice activated interent searches seems so iffy to me. Reasons such as security come to mind, as well as the many flaws that would come into play. It also diminishes privacy in a way. But, technology is gonna keep changing constantly no matter what, that’s just how our society runs. Looking for ways to improve and better the world we live in.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m one to speak because I’m dependent on technology as well. Man, I remember this one time we had a blackout at my house at night time for like 2 hours. I was going out of my mind. No electricity, no television, no computer, no phone [my cell was out of battery that day], and no microwave! I was so bored. And, realized that day I depend on technology A LOT

Yeah, technology is good in some ways. But too much of it and going overboard such as touch screen computers & voice activated internet is pushing the limit. All we have to do is press buttons to type, it’s pretty simple. Don’t tell me we’ve gotten so lazy to the point where we can’t type cuz our fingers are too tired to do the work for us. It’s just seems ridiculous! But yeah, there’s always pros and cons to everything, including technology!

  29. 29 Christine

Right now at the time period we live in technology is far advancing and improving on many levels. New ways of improving technology have always been successful and even beneficial. We see many of the things we use that they started off as something simple then esclated into something improved. Now with technology moving into a more greater direction of improving, the usage of technology is much simplier. However, from reading the article about gates wanting to use voice communication sofeware isn’t such a good idea. We use keyboards to keep our conversations private and using the voice communications idea would just allow others to know exactly what others are talking about and it doesn’t keep things private between people. Just living with the standard technology right now that we use is good because everyone knows how to use it and its far better then getting too technical with ideas like voice communications and touch screen computers

im a little worried about the future’s technology. pretty sure technology will be so advanced as time proceeds. i think its gonna be really crazy that how fast a computer or how small a cell phone is. all the technology today will be a lot cheaper when they come out with a better version of that same product in the future. of course they are going to make newer and newer technology everyday cant stop them. what ever makes money and what people like to buy, its gonna be made. its the fact that its easier and quicker and we dont have to waiste our time with old ancient technology. as long as they dont make robots and disobeys humans and backstabs us and kills the whole world that im ok with new technology.

  31. 31 Nikki Garavito-West

Eventually, computers as well as other technology will become more advanced in various ways. I’m alright with new and updated technology, but I think that talking to the computers isn’t all that great. Everyone hear every little thing you’re saying but also always know what it is that you’re doing.
Not only that, but what if you had a computer that operated based on the commands you told it to, through voice? And what if the computer picks up on other some other noises? This can cause for your computer to make unwanted actions.

I think it will be too annoying and somewhat complicated if you have this computer and you’re using it in an area where there is any kind of noise. Your computer would go nuts.

  32. 32 Taurean

I think that it’s highly probable to have touch activated and voice activated computers. However, I can already see flaws in how it might operate. Like if you use the computer in a noisy room, but it will also make certain tasks much easier. For example, typing a long paper will be much easier if all you have to do is tell the conputer what to write. It will save you alot of time and energy. However, I would want to use this feature in private because it would look wierd with a room of people yelling at the computers. Also it depends on how reliable the voice recognition will work. They should always leave the option of using a keyboard. I feel that as long as new technology makes our lives easier why not have it.

Computers now a days are getting more and more advanced, but no matter how quick the technology is developed, it isn’t fast enough. I’ve heard little about the replacement for keyboards and other hardware by reading your brain waves and going from the facial expressions but they were for gaming. I figure that if they can actualy have the technology out soon enough, it would be a great thing for most people who have a dificulty with computers. If the device can read off of your brain waves and facial expressions, many people who aren’t computer savy would comfortably be able to use a computer. This device seems like it would get rid of the key board and even the mouse. This rid of the two could potentialy lower the amount of carpul tunels developed from people who are constantly on a computer but maybe increase a risk of CVS.

There was a book that i read that was called Feed. This book was futuristic and basically talked of the future and people with computers in their heads. I actualy dont see this too far from reality. So by the time my kids have kids, this technology is what I’m expecting for them to have. If you actually read the book, you can see for yourself the problems with it.

It’s crazy how each day technology has advance, I still think those old pc computers are still in. Guess not. We do live in a technological society where every country competes to see who has the best. I think its a good idea for some of the plans that Bill Gates has in mind about making a computer through speech. But in another its something that society does not need. I mean each year people are getting lazier and always trying to find ways to make things have done for them, but i guess that is called business. All I can say is keep doing what you are doing Gates.

  35. 35 Michelllle :]

I don’t think that technology will get significantly more advanced in the near future. I mean, if you look back, to like old cartoons and movies and stuff, their interpretation of the future involved flying cars and what not. I remember watching a cartoon a long time ago when i was little, and it had to do with the future. The thing that stuck out most in my mind was that the year that this cartoon took place was the year 2013. And when i consider that now, 2013 is not that far away; and we’re no where near 60′s interpretations of the future.
And as far as backtracking goes, were not going to do that either. I think were getting pretty close to the age where everything will be either touch screen, or voice activated, or even both. most likely both.

The world’s going to end in 2012 anyway. So why worry?

I dont doubt that in the future we will move on from kek boards and on to touch screens and voice activated machines. Its alread starting to happen.
Most of the new technology is made to make something faster. If you havent noticed its also getting smaller. Inventors are trying to see how small or thin they can make things, the i-pod nano, mac book air. Everything is getting smaller and smaller.
I think that sooner or later all of this is going to have an oposite effect on us. Instead of making us faster it is going to slow us down. All of these new inventions are going to make us less capable of doing simple things.
We are going to become too dependent on technology and it is going to ruin us.

  37. 37 shiza G

i dont think that technology will change any time soon i mean if we look back the only things that have change is the way stuff looks like older movies back in the days there were a little sloppy looking like darker but now they are making the movie lighter and more rich in color. ummm instead of walk mans we use i pods but as of now we only come up with smaller things not better! we just make them looks better i mean the only thing that could be down is where stuff is voice activated or touch screen like the i phone but what else do u want a tv that is touch screen??? that would be stupid cause then u would need to get up and yeah thats why the control is the best! how about voice activated that would be difficult for the people who cant talk i think of technology has hit the point were things can be made into smaller and nice looking instead. but better new stuff i don’t think so

  38. 38 Laurie

I do think it’ll be possible to make such computers, however I think it’s going to take a LONG time to actually get it right. Let’s face it, some people don’t talk as clearly as others, and then there are also people who don’t speak fluently. Likewise, the majority of Americans (at least those in teen years and down) don’t always speak properly and use slang. If this is going to be done, I really doubt they’d have slang be recognized but rather, proper English (or whatever language for that matter). I think in time computers will improve in many aspects (like speed and get tinier) and I think we’re at the point where it won’t be too long before we start using computers that are actually not much like the ones we know today but actually are ON us in the sense of on our arms and through glasses instead of monitors and such. The setbacks I see are that without keyboards (talking about the voice activated ones), we will become a LOT less competent and a lot more lazy. It’s like the calculator..sure we can use them with ease, but this invention has made us slower at doing math WITHOUT the aid of a calculator. Just the same, without a keyboard we will lose the ability to use them with quickness, and this would also eliminate the need to be literate.

Bill Gates has a great idea for this new vocal michrosoft program. The only flaw is that its all ready out there. There are about two programs where you can sspeak and the program will process what you say into the form of word. The other instarment is a pen in which you write free hand then plug it in to your computer and it transforms it to word prossecer.

Billy is taking existing technology and trying to make it more popular. That is what he does best. This idea of having voice command for every possible thing on the computer is at the end pretty dam cool. Just saying the words “myspace” and having your computer automatically go to myspace.com is a wounderful thing.

But sooner as saposed to later we will all have little micro chips in our heads telling us what to do so there is no point.

  40. 40 Analy G 0_o

I think were still far from making those types of computers. Yeah… our technology has improved but its taken us a long time and progress for us to get where we are right now.
I do believe that one day maybe… we will have those type of computers where you just speak into them but in the mean time, we should just stick to the keyboard because that still too far ahead. Its taken us so long to finally perfect the function of the computer, they didn’t start to look at this once they invented it you know? However I think i this idea (if possible) would make us very lazy! Just like the computer has made us lazy and we’d spend even more time in front of the computer screen more then we already do! I believe we would become alienated from each other in the future if technology keeps on advancing and we don’t have to do as much work because, the computer would do it for us.

  41. 41 Robert H.

For voice recognition to be even viable as a substitute for keyboards, they have to work a LOT more . Ever tried to use the cell phone voice recognition? You: “Call Tom.” Phone: “Calling Mom.”

Voice recognition might be good for some things, but i think there will always be keyboards… unless you’re really good at dictating reports and essays, they’ll stick around. Especially for gaming and stuff like that. What I can see happening soon is laser keyboards, where it’s just a light that shines on the desk, and you click those. They have those, and they work…

Technolgy is such a brilliant and fast way to use, advance and take advantages of things. Day by day technology has been able to advance things such as iphones and i pods. things such as these were never around before and with our technology advancing faster then a speeding bullet i can trully expect amazingly crazy creations to happen. it will be like watching those crazy movies that take place in the future with flying cars, robots, mechanical body parts i can already imagine what the future holds for us and even our children. the only problem i can see rising against future technology advancing will probably be jobs and as well as taking over us too. humans will no longer have to do things for themselves. why have a human servant when a robot one is much faster. this can be both good and bad it just depends on the way they go about it. i can live with things getting better but maybe not things that can potentialy take over our world.

Technology has come a lang way from early computers that arised in the late 60′s and early 70′s. Changes first focused on what you could do with a computer or phone. They focused on how much memory fit in the computer and how it could be applied to everyday life. Early phones and computers were an expensive luxury, as well as big and bulky. The first cell phone is most commonly known by the name of “the brick” was the newest thing in the eighties. It only had a one hour battery life, and you could only make phone calls in certain areas, at certain times. Bill Gates wanted to make the computer available to not only rich people, but to the “average joe” as well. He wanted to produce a computer that was efficient and available to the greated American public. This was the same for cell phone technology. The first phone was valued at $3,500 and the first computers were valued at over $5,00 . Average America had not seen so much money in their lives.
Most of us can’t imagine carrying a batter pack for a phone that weighs around eight pounds, which we cannot text on. Then having to charge it every hour. Now a days, phone companies have made phones cheaper, smaller, and a lot more advanced. In the eighties, people never even heard of a TEXT message. They were bearly starting to experiment with the E-mail. Since then, e-mails have almost been extinct.
Our economy has no absolute effect because most of our cellphones are made outside of the United States. As far as computers go, there have not been major advances in technology. More attention has been directed to music products such as the “I pod” and cell phones. The newest advancement by far is the touch screen. Phones such as the “iphone” or the Verizon voyager. There is a public demand on phones. The public is looking for smaller phones, that are futuristic, as well as phones that provide services such as the internet and GPS.
Looking into the future, i would expect to see a phone that is virtually the same as a handheld computer. Technology is something that will never come to an end. This is because the public is always demanding thing that are smaller, cheaper, better quality, and faster. People from the 20th century would have never imagined having some of the things that we have today, and i’m sure that we could not imagine some of the things that we will have in another 25 years.
The only bad thing that i could think of is the advancements in technology, directly effect the technology in warfare. The more advanced technology gets, the more advanced and devastating weapons get. Such as how the Atomic bomb was followed by the Hydrogen bomb.

  44. 44 Raul

i don’t really like the idea of a keyboard less computer. i enjoy typing, and verbal commands? that may distract people who are watching tv, while you’re trying to chat. maybe a touchscreen keyboard? im sure they’ll make that before a keyboard less computer. then again im not to happy about that either, my experiences with zacks iphone are unhappy. since i cant feel where im at. id have to say maybe make certain commands able to process, such as verbal commands for opening certain files, something like that could be useful. but i’m pretty sure mac already has something like that. and most of us have something like that on our cell phones. so maybe a computer that is completely touchscreen? like those industrial touch screen computers i see everywhere.. oh wait thats already made. i looks to me like they’re going to have to do alot better than voice activated computers. id give or take, 5 years before they come up with some new revolutionary computer software. or not.

  45. 45 Cristina C

I don’t really see how having the speech screens rather than the keyboards are more favorable. Like many have already stated, having a keyboard gives you the privacy in conversations. Does having speech recognition screens mean that you would have to speak directly to the screen all the time? Or are they going to have those built keyboard in the touch screens? I think in the near future technology will be increasing rapidly as it has been for the past years. I don’t think it will be such a bad thing but I can see some problems arising because of new technological tools. People will become lazier and will start to depend (some already do) on technology for every single little thing. They won’t want to do anything the old fashioned way if they have a new simpler way of doing it.

Technology will always continue to change. It will become more advanced. I think that the keyboard less computer is a good idea. I know that today, there are computer programs and devices that use microphones. And there are some computers that have touch screens. They are really cool and they are a lot of fun to use. They are a great for people how are restricted on time and need to do something quickly. I believe that technology will always become more advance and it will help people become more efficient.

Wow that is really interesting. Who would of thought that we would be talking to a computer. That’s really crazy, in a way i think its really awesome that we dont have to type anything because we just have to speak in order for the computer to browse for what we want. However, what about when a computer is in a room and you are sharing that room with someone else and they are trying to go to sleep. What do we do then? I mean dont we have to speak in order for the computer to browse for something, since the keyboard is not neccesary anymore. That would be an issue because you wouldnt want to bother the person your sharing rooms with. Hence, in that case you do need a keyboard, meaning the keyboards are still neccesary in some cases. Althought some people might find it easier to just speak instead of typing, to others it really wouldnt maek a difference to them anymore because they got used to typing really fast so it wouldnt really matter. However, I see this as kind of a problem because the more technology advances the more lazy people get, and I believe that is becoming an issue now. ALthought it would be kind of interesting giving it a try to see how things work with it and well if it makes liefe easier than ok. I mean that way more work gets done. Its so interesting to see how technology gets better and better as the years pass. You think that there is nothing else to be done in this world to make it better but i guess some people are just not satisfied yet.

  49. 49 Andrew-west

i understand that Gates is looking into the future and assuming that we will just stop using keyboards- which may be the case… but just the fact that he is completely wiping out all keyboards is kind of exaggerating. There are still older people who prefer a good old type-writer. It just matters on the person.

As for looking at how technology is just going to keep growing…we cant stop it. I think i heard that technology basically doubles over an amount of time. How fast a computer can process doubles, which doubles again after an amount of time….which doubles AGAIN. its like 2*2=4…4*2=8…8*2=16…16*16= too much! haha…like buddy said, we’re gonna end up with more robotic limbs then human sooner or later. Just so that we can be a little more effecient. And there is basically nothing we can do to stop it

  50. 50 Martin S.

I think that having a touch screen computer would be a GREAT idea because you don’t have to type! It’s A LOT easier to just touch the computer monitor and tell it what you want to do. But at the same I think that having a computer that actually takes demands from you just by speaking to it is extremely weird. It would give us absolutely NO privacy online and it would just be extremely creepy! I mean to me the whole purpose of a computer is for it to be PERSONAL and if it takes voice demanda than it won’t be happy because people in other rooms in the house will hear what you are going on. For example, I am not supposed to go on PEREZHILTON.COM when I am supposed to be doing an essay, but if I now have to verbally tell it to go to PEREZHILTON.COM then I will get in trouble! Haha! Anyway, I think we are going to keep developing even right now as our economy is slowly going under! The first technological advancement that comes to mind when I think of the future in about 20 -30 years from now is flying cars! And I would personally think that would be strange at first but would be something that a lot of people would like because its cool! But I do think problems will occur because there would probably be A LOT of traffic in the sky like there currently is ALWAYS a lot of traffic in Southern California.

  51. 51 Mike-West

Technology will always continue to advance, but i do not think that using speech for computers is the right thing to do. I would be fine with it, but it should be an optional feature that people can get if Gates is going to do that. I personally like typing, because i do not really want people hearing what i am saying. The only reason I would think about doing the speech thing is for typing up school papers. Computers are always getting faster, smaller, and better. Thats just how it is. Everything is constantly being updated. In a couple of years there will be a new operating system and after 5 or so years pass there will be another and so on and so on. I think it would be cool if they had a touch screen computer. It might get a little annoying though, having fingerprints all over your screen all the time. Kids using technology nowadays are using it at a younger and younger age. Our society is starting to use technology a little too much and we are getting too dependent on it. We need to stop and appreciate the things we have now and not get too worked up over this stuff.

  52. 52 Lee Davis

The future will be based off movies we have seen. It seems that way because all of a sudden they started making flying cars. Based off movies like the fifth element thats how it seems that is how they will try or will make the future. The future will definitely make life that much easier. Household appliances that will activate off voice demands. There are so many different ways the future could go but I think it will be based off making humans less active or on their toes. It will definitely be thaT MUCH MORE EFFICIENT. THIS COULD AFFECT OUR OBESITY SITUATION.

  53. 53 Gabi-West

Ok, I know it sounds cheesy, but just by working at Office Depot I learned a lot about future technology. We had all in one PC’s (*cough* Mac ripoff *cough*) that were touch-screen and really interactive and all this crazy shit. And I don’t know if anyone else is a frequent YouTube browser, but I have come upon some pretty nuts videos of touch-screen and voice-interacted interfaces that can do really amazing things way more advanced than any iPhone or PC on the market. These are the prototypes for what is coming.

As for technology slowing down…I guess it has to happen eventually. During the World Wars and the Depression, technology for household objects was practically at a standstill because of the desperate situation. However, I think our society is technology OBSESSED and is always going to want the newer, faster, smaller, better product. I mean…I’m still crazy about how amazing my iPhone is and there’s already talks about an iPhone 2.0 even though this one has only been out for 8 months.

Voice activated typing. No thanks. :/ But we’ll see…hopefully it will be much more accurate and faster than the current voice activated word processing that goes on with those cheesy headsets. I’m pretty sure that by the time I have children, they’re going to be half robot and have computer chips injected at birth so that they will ALWAYS have WiFi haha.

  54. 54 brandon mccutcheon west house

I believe that technology will greatly advance in the future. Bill Gates ideas right now are very unique and shows how much we have advanced, but I do not agree with his idea of voice recognition because most people would rather type because of the way people speak. I think we will eventually see things that we could never imagine though. We probably will eventually see things such as flying cars and robots. These things will solve alot of problems but it also will cause some problems. Hopefully we will come up with some technology that will help things such as preventing global warming and things of that nature, but the look at the way things are going, it looks like our enviornment is only going to get worse, due to many of our technological advances such as the car. I hope our technology advances, but not to a point where we harm the earth.

  55. 55 RyanS

When i look at the future i expect to see technological advancements that make life easier to live. Things i hope to see in the future are friggin light sabers, laser guns, terminators, flying cars, moving side walks(so i dont have to physically walk lol), teleporters, voice activated everything, and little plugs i can stick in my head to learn anything(like in the matrix). But all the things i want are ridiculous and will probably never happen. I want my goddam flying car though!! NOW!! With new technological advancements, humans become lazy and FAT!!

    anyways….

bill gates is one trippy ass mother who has some crazy ideas. Voice activated computers? sounds tight for most things, but would be pretty annoying for the people around you. plus if you wanted to go to a naughty website, you would have to say it out-loud and you could get caught by your friends…or parents. personally i dont give a rats ass about voice activated crap. i would only use it for my stupid writing workshop papers. soo anyways voice activated stuff is whatever… ill have a better when i try it. =]

Well Me I think slowing down wont be a total bad thing. We as America are consitly in a rush and want to go go go and that could be the reason we are in the position we are in now. Technology will be sooo far out of our leged it will be crazy! Robots, Electiric cars, Energy friendly everything we are going places. Everything is getting bigger and better and whos to say that is a good thing? we could be moving faster than we really need to! I dont think it bad but I do think we should slow down!

  58. 58 Jay North

Well I believe that most of our lives is based on computers. Just making it more simpler might effect us on the long run. With Bill Gates ambition to make the keyboard disappear, he believes that it would make the science aspect a little bit more easier for them. Mostly technology will be more simple to use and we will depended on it more often in the future. But having a speech recognition for typing things will kinda be hard to develop. Mostly because with the different types of speeches out there for example people who talk slang or have a different accents. But you never know, technology will change. So basically Good ambitions, but a big risk.

Technology has come a long way from early computers that arisen in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He wanted to produce a computer that was efficient and available to the greater American public. This was the same for cell phone technology. The first phone was valued at $3,500 and the first computers were valued at over $5,000. Average America had not seen so much money in their lives.

Most of us can’t imagine carrying a batter pack for a phone that weighs around eight pounds, which we cannot text on. Then having to charge it every hour, phone companies have made phones cheaper, smaller, and a lot more advanced. In the eighties, people never even heard of a TEXT message. They were barely starting to experiment with the E-mail. Since then, e-mails have almost been extinct.

Our economy has no absolute effect because most of our cell phones are made outside of the United States.

Our Society is a very fast paced one. Our everyday lives are run my technology. Wether it is turning on our cars in the morning, using the cell phone, computer, camera, or the microwave; technology is all around us. I believe that technology is going to keep evolving, for better or worse, and we are the generation that is going to decide this. New things like voice command and touch screen will have its faults. People are going to touch the screen too hard or the computer will not understand someone because of their accent or studdering.
I hope to see technological advances in medicine and safety. I want a cure to be developed for HIV or cancer. I want trains, planes, and cars to be safer. That is what i hope to see in the future. I do believe that at some point we are going to slow down with our technology, but i do not see that happening anytime soon.

    =)

Technology is always advancing, no matter what its always going to get more complex. So what bill gates is saying about speech or touch screens is interesting but I’ve always thought that people prefer to send messages and such rather than talk, as if thats the point of having a keyboard because if you want to have a talk with someone over the internet they might as well call someone. But either way i can see this happening because since technology is getting more advance, its pretty much trying to make everything easier for us.Gates is even mentioning that some classes must become more advance because there is so much information so i think if they try to slow down everything it would be a good thing. So we don’t have to have anything in a rush because when things are in a rush it doesnt turn out right. So i think slowing down would be a great idea.

  63. 63 brandon mccutcheon west

i think that technology will greatly advance. i think that bill gates idea shows how much we have come but i dont fully agree with it. especially the voice recognition part. i think that more people would prefer keyboard over the mic because it is what they are use to. I do believe technology will advance even farther in the future. We will see things such as robots and flying cars. and i also believe we will solve many problems but that also will cause many problems such as cars and other pollutants are causing global warming. I hope will do greatly advance but not at the price of harming the earth

  64. 64 Byron

Bill Gates, who is this man whom the article talks about. Oh yea he is that one Microsoft dude. I understand that we are advancing greatly with technology. In conventions such as the ugh forgot this one technology convention that happens each year, you see so many advanced stuff. I wouldn’t doubt seeing a computer that cleans your room. Microsoft though, ugh I wouldn’t trust them with this. Recently, I have noticed that they try to imitate everything and everyone. Most of the stuff they try to come out with isn’t all that great. For example, some of you might not now, but Microsoft came out with this thing that seems like a table, but its actually a computer, but a touchscreen one. Everyone was like wow, but when it came out, it was a load of horse poop. Not only was it expensive, but its capabilities were minimal. Next we have the origami everyone went crazy for… at first, but then that was whack. Even Vista was whack. So to consider Gates as a lead on guy with this, I wouldn’t follow him. Some other guy, like I dunno Steve Jobs, would do a very sufficient job. He already did with the iPhone. As far as science stuff, their is load of other companies out their covering that already. But yes, I do agree that we are advancing at a very alarming speed. A successful flying car, touch screen equipment, robots. It all feels like sci-fi movie, or like Futurama. I hope cloning comes sooner, I want a clone =) named Kenpachi.

  65. 65 Azucena Amaya

i believe that Mr. Gates has a good perspective on things. Technology is always changing. Not to long ago there were ipods that were tough to be ‘small’ but now look at the size! they got so tiny that they are able to fit in the palm of your hand! for example the ipod nano/video. before they used to be one called the ipod mini but the ipod mini compared to the newest ipods, it looks like a giant. Also the ipod touch. It has 2 buttons! thats amazing. Things like these will always improve for the “better”. But i believe that a voice based computer is far from our reach. because computers and keyboards are used mainly for the person that wants privacy. Chatting online is an example. one can do it with many people in the room and they wont notice what you are trying to communicate. so i believe that even if we come up with a voice based computer many would prefer the original keyboard.

  66. 66 Silky J.

Has anyone here used voice recognition systems? Sure they are cool, but they are just a novelty. They get the words wrong when you are talking, and you have to go back and change it. Plus what if you’re in Starbucks writing an essay? You will have alot of writing like, “I’d like an Iced White Mocha Americano with 6 shots of expresso.” Plus private IMs will not be private because it’s like talking on speakerphone now. Sure, it’s cool, but is it practical? I think not.

  67. 67 Briana Bowen

Ever since I was in middle school every couple of months U.S. technology would advance quite a lot over time. During my elementary years I remember when I only used to have one computer and printer in the house with really slow internet. However know our family had 3 computers and printers, and two of the computers have DSL. It is so weird how fast computer technology has grown over the last couple of years. I really do not see computer technology developing within a small pace. I just think that compared to the earlier days where computer technology was developing so fast every couple of years it is now looking like our technology is taking longer to develop when it really is not.

In the future I see phones being able to do more and more different task than just calling people and sending texts. I see phones having more programs on there and also becoming smaller and smaller as it is getting developed. The problems that the phones will solve is no longer will people have problems with their connection when calling people. Right now I see the cell phone connection with the satellites the real big problem that mot people have a problem with.

In the future I also see us as a country becoming more and more dependent on technology. I know now that I can not imagine anymore living without any TVs, my phone, or even computer. The real problems that will are more and more rapidly is the dependency on technology.

  68. 68 Eric Barber

the use of a keyboard is sometimes a pain to use in certain times, but they are the most accurate way of getting what you want on the computer. speakerphones/voice recognition systems are not that accurate in the ways of getting you speach right, and for people with heavy or even light accents are going to have trouble with english recognition. i think it is a good idea to invest in this to make it become more accurate, but not any time soon. if you use your phone to call someone by voice recognition you have to say it in the EXACT same way that you recorded it or it either will not recognize your voice or itll call another person.

i think that in the future we will get as lazy that we will want to operate all of our personal items with either our voice or by our mind. this may sound kinda ridiculous to some thinking, that we will never get that advanced but i think that some time outside of my time that it will happen.

  69. 69 Loopy

I do belive that technology will improve vastly in our lifetimes. I even belive the keyboardless computers will be available to the public in a few decades, maybe less. I mean, now you have the iPhone, which is completely touch. Or how about Tablet PCs, which are also touch screen.
Having a computer with no keyboard and voice recognition might sound cool, but then again everything has its cons.
What if your in a public place and you want to have a private converseation? Would the computer be able to hear your whisper? Will it take in the background noise and mix it in with your words? Maybe they should give people the ability to change the settings on computers and allow for both these capabilities. Do like the Tablet PCs and have an on screen keyboard.
    Its just a thought.

  70. 70 Monica Solis

As the technology advances so will are dependence. We will do least as they do more, which I believe is not a goo because we are not going to be able to function with out a computer ship. Although the new and better technology we make are lives easier things that we find command now will be lost and replace by electric letters, pictures and other that are more personal.
Yes, it is great that we as society will diminish role for keyboard, especially if your a bad speller like me, but that is the worst idea never because people will forget how to spell / write…why learn how too when a computer or this new technology does it for you? Why think when you do not have too. Even in the kids of today we see how technology can mess up a kid, all they want to do is play with the play stations and other stuff.
The further technology advances the closer we are to are destruction.
ps just like the matrix and other movies or books

It doesn’t surprise me that Bill Gates is trying everyday to think of new ideas for Microsoft and the future. But the guy is a genius, I mean a touch screen keyboard? Using your voice to surf the internet? Awesome technology, and lots of people will love it, finding that its more convenient to use your voice instead of typing for hours on a regular keyboard. And also curious is to what he will think of next, will the touch screen keyboard be able to be used with other computer software? Or just for typing up a paper? Will other companies like Apple compete with Bill Gates and his new creations?

Steve Jobs is another genius, the MacBook Air is one of the companies newest creations and is doing well in the stores, but you can’t forget the iPod Touch, iPhone, iPod Classic, and the iPod Nano. The problem with the MacBook Air is that there is no CD Rom drive, I watched the Keynote Address on Apple’s website and found that to be interesting. You have to buy a separate device in order to sync your favorite CDs or install the lastest update of Mac Leopard. Whether or not you have to buy a separate device to install or sync things onto you’re Mac’s hard drive, it is the “World’s Thinnest Notebook” and has to keep their word by not adding extra thickness.

Both companies amazing, and both always competing. No what matter Bill Gates creates (Haha, that rhymed, Lol. :-) ) it will be a hit with the consumers, and people will want more. This is just the beginning of what will come next in the world of Technology.

  72. 72 Ameen A

We live in an age of technology and it only gets better. Technology always gets more advanced. We grew up with crappy television and video game graphics, which now have evolved into realistic graphics. Mp3 players have advanced enough to play movies on small screens. What I personally would like to see is a very advanced hybrid car or an alternative fuel out of something useless (which of course wouldn’t make it useless). No problems could really arise from that. Technological advances in our vehicles could help out more than it can destroy
After reading this blog, I stared at my old PC with windows 95 on it. You can see the pixels when it loads. It’s pretty unsightly compared to what is out now. I’ve already seen some programs where voice is used to type, but they have not been as accurate as I thought they would be. But overall, technology constantly helps us and makes life a lot easier, but it’s also been giving nature a run for it’s money.

More memory in smaller music players is always good too.

  73. 73 rebekah

when i think of the future i think of flying cars and robots. flying cars would be pretty cool and possibly going to made in the near future. but with all the cool and good outcomes of the advancements of technology comes the not so good. ever since i saw the movie irobot it made me think what if that really happens. if technology tries to take over? that kind of scares me. so yea i am into the whole advancement of technology but to an extent, like the thing bill gates was talking about, that seems pretty cool

  74. 74 Hillary Acosta

    wow… you guys are weird.
how fun. Um, no… people said it one hundred years ago “oh yes! flying cars in the year 2000″ well guess what? the only flying thing beside a freaking bird is a plane…STILL. yes there will most likely be voice automated computers but the chances are that they will be a one time thing…we’ll buy them, we won’t like them, and that’s it. Like Sam said, the computer along with the internet is where most private conversations are made. It’s a powerful thing, the key board. When my sister or someone is in the same room as i, and i’m talking to someone, i don’t want my sister to know what i’m saying, that’s absurd, oh but i suppose that since the future will be so great, that they’re going to build soundproof walls to go around you and the computer so no one can hear. that’s Gay privacy :) . i can only see business’s /corporations using that stupid speech maching only to get their work done faster, then when they realize that the computer doesn’t understand the words that are being spoken, you wind up spending more time correcting the computers errors than you would actually typing.

that’s a lot of talking a person would have to do. it would kill me. one good thing, i think is that people would probablu get out of the “idk, wtf lol lmao” stand, and talk like humans, not computers…

    that is all…idk. lol.

In the future I hope to see book to brain scanners and instant weight loss machines. I also would like to be able to fly. If any one of those could be done I’d be happy. They would solve a number of problems. One would be obesity, which has clearly taken over our country. With an instant weight loss machine, fat would be a thing of the past. And with book to brain scanners we could all become geniuses in any given area. No one would have to stay up long nights anymore finishing a book for hours, instead they could get it all in a matter of minutes. It really would save time and lots of energy. And to be able to fly, is just a personal desire.

As far as the new technology being talked about here. I think all its doing is moving us forward to become a more technologically sophisticated society.I feel though that if any one of the future prospects we have for ourselves doesn’t go full through completion, technology could get serious backlash and might never be the same to us again. Maybe taking us back a few generations.

  76. 76 Brianna Root

I find it really amazing that all this new technology is being created. I think it’s pretty exciting. Since we’ve started creating new gadgets, there’s no turning back now. That could be a scary thought actually.

Bill Gates is an amazing genius. He has created so much technology and now he has come up with this keyboard. I think that he is one of the leading men to really push technology. I’m all for change and a new beginning, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. If a line isn’t drawn then we would go out of control. We still need a little bit of do-it-yourself stuff. Let’s not get too lazy.

  77. 77 lo ro

    And what about accents?!
A little jumpy there mr gates…
I think the world just needs to take a break.
You can work on digitized vocalization of online surfing another day.
    We’ll live!
The things we need to address in the future starting now are the global issues staring us dead in the face.
The idea of synthetic trees and robotic wildlife is disturbing.
We’re “paving paradise to put up parking lots” for crying out loud.
But back on track, over time we’ve managed to continue to break the spell of the typicality of life and advance into this modern day and age.
Knowledge is key to survival so let’s use it shall we? Put your pocket book down for one second and look out the window. That image of naturale is ALL i want to be able to see in the future.

    aaaand… maybe some anti-gravity dunks : P

Let’s hold on to what we have while we still can.

  78. 78 Alyssa S.

In my honest opinion, I think that Gates has goneover his head. He has already made a name for himself and Microsoft is one of the most crucial aspects in everyday life, so it may seem. But I htink that trying to “advance” technology through touch and speech-controlled screens, is a little pushy. I mean it may seem cool and all, but it is kind of an unnecessaty need. It’s quite ironic though, because i have jus come come from best buy and saw a computer that reminds me of this article. It was a computer they were promoting and had at the front of the 2 aisles displaying computers, laptops, and a few printers. At first it looked lyk a widescreen flat screen t.v. but it wuz actually a touch screen for computers. There was no need for a mouse, but a keyboard was still there. I was quite intrigued by the screen, not only because of the fact it was huge and touch screen, but also because it had an on screen keyboard that you can jus touch to input letters. Of course this product was very expensive, but for what it had to offer, it was fitting. But it causes you to think. If a touch computer screen can range from $1000 , just imagine how much a this “invention” Gates wants to create will cost. But nonetheless, I believe the most significant negative aspect of this newfound thought of technology is the fact that it is unnecessary and may cause complications. I mean the I-Phone is quite complicated,, and when this type of computer plays into mind, it’s just lyk an I-Phone, except much much much more bigger! I think that society today is quite fine with what Gates has offered to us, and complicating technology may just make people lose interest in modern technology.

  79. 79 celise

I personlayy like the keyboard. With my experience of voice operated machines they don’t work that well. opperating a cell phone with my voice was horrible. The phone never understood what I was saying. An easy process of calling someone became long and tedious.

Maybe Gates can make the voice command system on a computer more user friendly. That would definitely help, but I really believe a lot of people will be resistant to the change. Keyboards have been around for a very long time starting off on typewriters and then switching to computers. A lot of people who already have difficulty with the complexity of computers mught just give up if they make things much more difficult.

  80. 80 Jordan

Its no doubt that technology will continue to advance, but how much until it becomes too much. I’ve always thought of robots one day. Maybe that will happen. But, for now, i already see technology taking over most of our lives. I mean, look at west house, half of the students have macs or other laptops and bring them to school everyday, myself included. We all have phones that we cant live without. Technology is just apart of us, and the more advanced it becomes the more we will rely on it and the less we will know how to do. We will have some form of technology solving problems for us.
For voice operating computers ans such, i think it is possible, a little creepy. I mean my mac can read me websites and papers and i just feel weird because its talking to me. But we can talk faster that we can type and in todays society the fast and more efficient we can get something done the more likely we are to do it that way. Its only a matter of time until everything we do, we rely on technology.

  81. 81 Stephanie Van Zant[EAST]

Slowly but surely, society is solely going to rely on technology. We’re already doing it. In order to function and stay updated, computers and the Internet seem to be essential. My little brother is only five years old and he already knows how to turn the computer on and get to all his games and type his name and everything. He’s already computer savvy. He knows how to operate cell phones, ipods, the playstation, the televison. \
It’s only going to be improving and we’re moving and adapting with it. These things become obsolete because they only get better and better.
As far as touch screen computers, of course. It just seems like a “duh”. Keyboards will always be there however. People aren’t going to enjoy talking to their computers. Maybe a touch screen keyboard is in question? :)
