New Poll: US more ready for a black president than female one
19 Comments Published by clay January 21st, 2008 in State and Local Politics, U.S. Politics.I am not sure what makes one more ready for a black president versus a female president. I would have like to see reasons to go along with these polling questions.
A new poll just out from CNN/Opinion Research tied to Martin Luther King Day today finds blacks and whites optimistic and pretty much in agreement — 84% whites, 78% blacks — that a lot or moderate progress has been made toward the civil rights leader’s dream of equality in American society.
But hidden near the bottom of the survey of nearly 1,400 adult Americans Jan. 14-17 is some disturbing news for Sen. Hillary Clinton heading into tonight’s Democratic debate in South Carolina and the party’s primary there Saturday.
The survey’s numbers show that Americans are more ready for a black president than a female president. You read that right.
In Saturday’s Nevada caucuses, Clinton beat Barack Obama in the total….
vote, but Obama captured something more than 80% of the black vote from the wife of the president sometimes called “the first black president.” That already augured ill for her fortunes heading into South Carolina where half the Democratic vote is African American.
But the CNN poll today shows that 72% of whites and 61% of blacks believe the country is ready for a black president. That’s up from 65% and 54%, respectively, two years ago. (Both polls have a margin of error of +/-4.5%.)
But asked if the country is ready for a female president, blacks and whites both are in agreement; they’re less sure — only 63% of both whites and blacks answer yes. That’s up slightly (from 58%) for whites but down among blacks from 67% since December, 2006.
Interestingly, men and women remain in agreement on this issue, too. In 2006, 60% of both genders said yes and this time it’s 65% female and 64% male.
Food for thought, or maybe some debate questions in a few hours.

No! That’s a bad CNN! What did I tell you about making this about race? Go sit in the corner and think about what you did!
Seriously, this just makes me want to hurt someone. A female president isn’t going to go to war every thirty days and a black president isn’t going to… uh… take everything off the White House menu but fried chicken? Is that the stereotype I should be going with? If anyone else has any better black jokes, feel free to chime in. What was my point? Oh whatever, you can figure out what point I was trying to make here.
Anyways, whatever happened to CNN questioning whether or not Barack is “black” enough? Seriously, these people need to decide on a single exploitative stance on this “story” and run with it. The only thing that hurts my head more than pointless bullshit is inconsistent pointless bullshit.
Oh, and two more thoughts…
1) Who thought that doing a poll about race around MLK day would be a good idea? Of course people are going to say that they don’t care about race around this time of year. They want to think they’re more civilized than their racist 60′s counterparts. Not that I’m saying the results would go dramatically towards the women’s direction, but c’mon. You can’t call yourselves a legitimate news station and pull crap like this.
2) I like the HillaryCare ad on the side. You should paper your room with these, Purther.
ok, 3 things:
first of all, im commenting on this because the title interested me, however it was kinda funny to find out that the only person who commented on this besides me was laffin (well, sorta a “how did i know?” type of funny)
and secondly, well said (typed? written?) laffin, i agree with you on a lot of these.
and thirdly, to laffin again, you could use the fact that obama has a pretty good job already.
hmm, interesting title, too bad that there aren’t reasons for the poll questions. and why the hell would you cary out this poll on MLK day?! couldnt that skew the results? and while i dont like hillary, how the hell are you “ready” for a black president or “ready” for a woman president? and it is rather inconsistant of cnn to go from “is obama black enough?” to “US more ready for a black president than a female one”. and like laffin, i hate bullshit (“is obama black enough?”) and inconsistant bullshit. how about we just vote for the better politician and then complain about how that politician’s policies made everything go to shit, then vote for them again. it works, provides ample opportunities for change. the reason i hate politics so much (be it national or scholastic) is all the bullshit that gets flung around. lets just face it people, the popular candidate s the one who is going to win, not necessarily the most qualified. who is the most qualified? who knows? i dont. who is the most popular? we’ll find out soon enough now wont we.
and to cnn: follow stuff that is actually important like the candidates’ stance on the isues you idiots, not something trivial such as the race or gender of the candidates
maybe i should run for president some day. who’s with me!?
I honestly don’t care what the gender is or the race, the next president is should be the best and if the next should be either, then let it be. we should jugde not by skin or by gender, but by the morals those people stand for, and if they don’t state thier morals, or you believe them to be bad for America then don’t vote. becuase if we are to jugde by apperance then how do we plan to prosper. if the best chopice to Americas is something crazy then wouldn’t if be selfish of us to deny that choice the right to prosper. “the difference between geniuos and insane is success”. so the choice should not be between black, white , male or female, but rather if it is Cliton or Obama? that is the Question!
Colorblind my ass.
If MLK’s dream has come so far, then why do we still acknowledge the fact that Obama is black in the first place? Why is it like that at all when a person of a particular race starts doing something not typically associated with that race? Eminem was the first “white rapper”. Big deal. He didn’t become a rapper because he was white. And Obama isn’t going to be a good, bad, better, or different president just because he’s black. Does his party platform have anything to do with his race? Does he ever say, “AND FREE UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE FOR ALL NEGROS! MONEY FOR EVERY AFRICAN-AMERICAN WHOSE DESCENDANTS WERE SLAVES!” He doesn’t seem to care that he’s black. Why should we? Yes. He is obviously not white. We have acknowledged this ever since he became a possible candidate. But enough is ENOUGH. If I have to hear one more comment about his race or lack there-of or any more bullshit, I’m going to stop following the race altogether. He’s a great man who has captured the attention of millions of Americans regardless of their race and should be be elected, will make a great leader. That’s all. He is a man. I don’t care if he’s purple. He’s just a man.
And as for Hillary…I hate this. I’ve acknowledged it before and even did so in last week’s blog. I feel as though the candidacy is either going to be reserved for a black man or a white woman and whoever is deemed less offensive will receive the nomination. If we lived in a day and age where television and visual effects in general were not so prominent, we might not care so much. But we have to see them on television day after day and we begin to realize that yes, there are differences between these two leaders. Huge ones. But merely physical. And what’s up with the whole bit about her crying? She’s human! She’s being followed around by cameras constantly especially while campaigning, and she became emotional. It was not a ploy for her to gain more votes or to appear more feminine. She did not win the primary that day because of pity votes. I don’t give a fuck if I see a candidate crying…it’s not going to make me change my votes because I feel bad for them! And I’m pretty sure most people would agree with that. As far as I’m concerned, we need a woman in the white house. And white, black, Asian, or purple, Hillary is a woman. Women have incredibly different ways of dealing with difficult situations and I assure you she will not be as irrational or vengeful as our current president seems to be.
The bottom line is that a Democrat needs to win the presidency this November. I don’t care if it’s a black man, a white woman, a black woman, a Mexican man, it doesn’t matter. But our country desperately needs change. Now I hope TV starts recognizing the achievements of these people instead of their sex and skin color. Obviously, neither one lives up to the stereotypes which have been put on them. You don’t see Obama at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles eating sweet potato pies and you don’t see Clinton knitting and making sandwiches and martinis for her husband while he watches football. America is changing. So should our politicians!
For years on women have been looked down upon when it comes to politics. I feel very disturbed when they make jokes about hillary clinton sending us to war everytime shes going to get on her period. Jokes like these show how narrow minded some people can be. Also what does it matter of race or gender when becoming the next president. Shouldnt we be judgin them by how they want to help america prosper instead of wasting our time with pointless arguments about obama being black enough or hillary clinton being a woman.?!!
What do they even mean about is the U.S. “ready” for a black or female president, why is it that it is worded to sound so harsh. They make it seem like this change is automatically bad, change is not alwways bad. Change allows us to prosper and discover many new things that will help our future. Prosperity is what this country is based on and not letting this change occur will not allow us to prosper due to that we keep taking the same actions and trying to resolve them the way that we have before but that have failed.
Shouldnt we stop runnin in circles and find a result that will help us in politics in america.?!?!!?!
A president who is elected is meant to serve their country and help their country from situations. So it shouldn’t matter at all if the president is black based on race or female based on gender. In the end its not about the color or the gender, its about how good they are to lead their country. Obama and Hillary are both good candidates this year for the presidential election but its ob sured that people should base it on race or gender. Obama and Hillary both have different plans on running the country if they win. However, since both are technically different meaning by race and gender then our country isn’t electing a president for the right reasons. We should be electing our president based on qualifications and promises on leading our country for the best. Also ensuring Americans that they have plans on helping our economy and our soldiers out there serving. Because really in the end its going to end up being the one who is the better leader with plans for our country.
Lets just face it we live in a fucked up world with fucked up people who judge people fr he stupidest shit. Lets take a closer look at this. These canidates Obama and Hillary are running for presidentcy right? In the news and on Opra we hear things like this all the time, “This could be the first black president,” Or ” This could be the first women president, this could do so much for a womans right.” That all fine and dandy, seriously thats cool. But, I think they’re looking at this the wrong way. I mean they’re running for president of the United States, thats gotta mean someting right? Would’nt you think you woud have to be a little ore qualfied then just a black guy or just a women. It’s good that there running for president because they too believe that they can acomplish somethng and make this country ad the world we live in a better place. But, I think the way the news and the canidates Hillary and Obama are looking going about it the wrong way. If you want to be president thats cool, dont drag your race or gender into, okay.
That’s actually amazing, and i would of never guess that people would rather have an African American president rather than a female president. The fact that woman ever where have strived to make women what they are today, and now people still wouldn’t trust them with control of this country. I guess women still have a long way to go if they want to one day be in charge and make themselves more known. Im not sure exactly why people wouldn’t want a female president but in my own opinion i wouldn’t mind having a female president. Heck it would be nice for a change every once in a while, and we would probably have a lot less conflict with other nations since women are known to be less aggressive. Females think differently than males and in recent studies have shown to be even smarter than the average man. Therefore I don’t think having a female president would be such a bad idea, instead I would forward to it and encourage it
I’m always wary of these kinds of polls. Honestly, what a bunch of BS. How do you answer a question like “Is America ready for black president?” “How about a woman?” They don’t tell us anything. Its just how people feel, which is intangible and can change based merely on the fact if you’re hungry or not. It’s an emotional question, which will give an emotional answer, which says nothing.
Whether America is “Ready” or not, the fact is that a democrat is probably going to be the next president, and Obama and Clinton are the frontrunners. The Democrats wouldn’t run either of them if they didn’t have a chance of winning. So, America, whether your fickle self is ready or not, there’s a change in the presidency on the horizon.
The only thing I have to say about this is why the hell would you make this about gender and race??? The American society is so contradictory in itself. I thought Obama wasn’t black enough now he’s are symbol! WTF!! This makes me so angry. And what does Hillary Clinton being a woman have to do with her qualifications! We shouldn’t be taking polls on race and gender because that TOTALLY defeats the purpose of a forward movement! This article just made my anger get to an 8. In class when I’m always joking around saying “oh it’s because I’m black” to every little statement, I’m joking, but this shit makes me think well fuck is it cause I’m black??? We should judge them on their qualification and views not there, personal lives, race, and gender. Speaking of personal lives, I’m really starting to get annoyed with Hillary Clinton talking about Obama smoking weed when he was in college. So the fuck what he smoked weed! All that means to me is he’s willing to try new things, and I like new things =). Stick to what matters and none of that shit matters.
Oh and Fuck you CNN for this dumbass report!!!!
the reason in which people are ready for a black president rather than a female president is because when people think about a female president they think hillary clinton and some of them think that shes not the right president for U.S.A, So its not referring to women in general but that HIllary is not the right president. Also their is some people that would think that the presidency would only be fore men. Meaning they think men do it better. But thats what I think people would imagine. So for example if they had to chose between a actual women and a black president with out anyone in mind then i think they would end up voting for a female president. But since today they only think Obama or Hillary its not clear who they really would vote for.
Honestly I dont think that america is ready for neither. If obama becomes president and fucks up he will be put on time out they will grill his ass like carne asada. You can say that everyone should look at their views on how they will build on our nation but all they see is a black man and a woman. Most likely they will cancel them both out and choose another candidate. If this country is really ready for a change then they will stop with these type of titles jus because they know they are controversial. So much happens in the news with black celebrities such as the recent tiger woods incident, Don Imus, and michael vick now imagine obama running america. They already disapprove of bush for things he has done in the past they will definitely get after hilary for any reason they can find.
When people consider a women or a black president, a lot goes through their heads. Sadly alot of people are considering race ad gender more then policy and ethics. I am not a very political person, by choice, however if I were to really start to follow the political campaign, I would look behind what color skin the person has or what is in between his or her legs. I also feel that some people are saying they will vote for one person but when in the poll both their true intentions will come out. I am a bit annoyed with this campaign for we are pointing out things that are obvious and make no real difference in whether the person is capable of working in in the white house.
I really dont like the way how the media is portraying the democratic candidates, they almost make it seem like a circus. I dont think that gender or race should be an issue, i think people should be more mature and look at this situation the way it should be viewed. It’s strictly an election for either candidate that should be decided by who does what, not by what who looks like what, who or how.
Right now for the first time in history we are facing something new that might possibly happen for our country. A woman and a black senator are both running for president for the Democratic Party. Also for once it looks like there is a good chance that either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama might win the Democratic primary. So the fact that our country might actually have a black or a woman for president seems very great.
This poll that CNN conducted seems pretty accurate, but there is always still room for error. For instance people are going to say if it is around Martin Luther King Jr. day that African –Americans have made progress. So by giving that survey at that time was sort of a biased. However most importantly is that this poll about preferring a black president over a woman can be wrong because thee are many different polls doing the same out there. Some of the polls are saying people prefer a black president over a woman president but others do say that they prefer a woman president rather than a black one. So in reality there is really no way to tell, which way the polls will end up swinging until the final votes are counted.
I believe that this concern for if the country prefers a woman president over a black president is should not be a big concern. To tell the truth I think that people should vote on if they believe with the same issues with the different candidates rather than the color of their skin or gender. That is the problem I have with Hilary Clinton, which is that she uses her position as a woman for a reason we should vote for her. For example in an article on the Ashcan ratings site it says that voting for Hilary because she is a woman is only one step above not voting for her because she is a woman. In my opinion I agree with them because voters should consider candidates because of their stance on different issues not because a person reportedly tears up and has so many dreams for this country.
The problem with this election to me is that people are basing their votes on gender and race when the real bases should be on the issues.
OkaY this is the best TOPIC right NOw! I was just talking about this with my mom! soo hear me out! American isnt ready for either a Black Pesident or a woman President and this is the reason. Still in some parts of te world different countries dont think or respect woman in higher power and since we do alot of trade through other counties I feel that our ecomony will suffer. The image that the US has put out ight be doubled looked because there is a woman in power.( has anyone thought that this might be a way for clition to get back in office? Supporting his wife?)
On the other hand having a Black president is wonderful and the black cummunity has been waiting for this I dont think it will happen just because of the place we have had to come out of just to get the point to even run for an office position. Racism, and Prejudec is still very relivent and would put a large amount of the population in shock to have a Afican AmericaN running the country. I would also love to be proven wrong and wake up seeing that the next president of American Is Obama! I just am saying that it proboly wont happen?!>!>!
Then agin I could be totally wrong and Americam could be ready to move on with our future and forget about the pass. I will have to wait and see!
lets just face it! there is always going to be race and gender.it is what it is but now we have. to face it. in this country they are so many options and race’s but what does that have to with who is a better leader for our country. Why not a women…because we would be going to war ever 28-30 days…what the hell just cause you are on your period doesn’t mean that we are going to war just means that shes on her period! and WHY not a black president if so many people have a problem with a women taking charge then why not a black person its JUST a COLOR nothing else its not like his retarded or something that he cant be a persdient his just black so everyone need to stop looking at gender and at color and start focusing on who is the better leader
I was completely shocked at reading this especially because I remember reading some statistics on how there are more women than there are men in this country. If the women arent going to defend our rights and take us to the next level then i dont know who will cause it certainly wont be a man. The other day I was watching the Tyra Banks show when she had Obama and Clinton there on seperate days and she discussed about how because shes black she feels the need to vote for Obama but because shes a woman she feels she needs to vote for Clinton to empower us and that it was a difficult decision for black women in the U.S. Thats very true.
I personally think we are behind look at all the other countries in the world with female leaders. Ireland, Iceland, Haiti, India, Liberia, Chile, New Zealand, The Phillippines, Finland,Germany, Switzerland are all countries with powerful ruling women. Even in places like Pakistan where women arent allowed to show their bodies and are taken as less than a man have female rulers like prime minister Benazir Bhutto. The U.S. needs to step into the century and join the trend of female rulers.
Also the race for president isnt just Obama and Clinton. What if America decides its not ready for either race or gender and we end up with the norm which is a white man?
