New gangs move into the I.E.

What can cities do in the Inland Empire?  If we can’t give individuals better choices than joining a gang, we need to look at how to break up the gangs.  Should we look to cut their financial support?  Where do gangs get their financial support?  Or do you expect the police to lock up as many gang members as they can identify?

A growing number of gangs with roots outside the Inland Empire are moving into the area, adding to gang-related activity and, in two cities, actually outnumbering homegrown members, according to local law enforcement agencies.

Authorities point to several causes for the trend, including gangs’ desire to establish new turf, additional police attention from cities they left, and sometimes parental hope that moving to a new city will offer a fresh start and prevent their children from being involved with gangs.

The trend is most noticeable in statistics kept by the Ontario and Fontana police departments.

For the first time since 2005, Ontario police say outside-the-city gangs outnumber homegrown gangs – 58 percent to 42 percent this year. The department was unable to provide the total number of gang members.

Some of the change can be attributed to more arrests and jail terms for Ontario gang members, Officer Gabe Gutierrez said.

With more Ontario gang members being arrested, “other gangs see an opening,” Gutierrez said.

Fontana also has been affected by transplanted Los Angeles County gangs, Fontana police Sgt. Billy Green said.

Eighty-one gangs operate at varying levels in the city, Green said. Of that total, 13 are based locally. The other 68 are from the west – mostly Los Angeles County – though not all are active, he said.

There are 578 gang members in Fontana‘s 13 gangs, Green said.

Fontana gangs run along racial lines and include the Latino Surenos and Nortenos and black gangs, Green said. The black gangs have migrated from Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley, he said.

So the problem is that gangs are moving to the I.E. I think that is really horibble. I would never think that gangs where anywhere but in long beach. Thats where i grow up and gangs where live out there. Then of course you have all the gangs that are in LA. The motherland. So having them in Fontana is kinda unheard of. Gangs are dangerous and a waste of young peoples lives. If you live in the getto like LA or Long Beach u use it as an excuss or a cruch, but if you live in fontana, pomona where ever you cant as u have no opportunies that would be a lie. I think the only way to keep people out of gangs is to give them an alturnive. I would like to see more boys and girls clubs open, YMCAs, teen jobs something to keep them out of the street. Let them go to school and them send them to an after school activity!

Like Priya said… this whole gang movement to the I.E. is horrible and utterly ridiculous. I think they just make up reasons to take over other people’s turfs. It’s all tied in with politics, I think. There’s nothing we can really do since we are not in control of the situation. If the police keeps locking up these gang members… sooner or later for every one member they arrest, they would have to eventually release a previous jailed gang member. And I don’t honestly know anything about gangs having financial support, I think it’s more like drug trafficing and crap like that. But then again that’s out of our control as well. I think the only best thing to do right now is set up neighborhood watch programs or awareness programs to let those gang members know that we know what they are doing… and for punishment for these new gangs, they should be sentenced to community service… I mean a jail can get full of people and have to “turn away” some, but the world can not get enogh helping hands, and not to mention there is always room for improvement.

Gangs??? sounds interesting, well there will always be gangs no matter what, even if you caught them all, if you cathc them all then people will srat new ones. Its impossible to cathc them all, and pluss theres not enough jails to hold them all, look just in fontana it had about 600 almost thats 1 city, just imgaine east la, pomona, Chino ahahah but all them cities, they all have more than 600, thats alot of members. But what they can do is probably sart programs even though this wont help maybe some of the gnag mebers wil see what else there is to do and they wont be gang related no more. Also for example my mom works for a some what juvi. but its agroup home after juvi. well they take them out on outings and to places that are fun. sometyimes my mom tells me that these guys( gangs members) have neevr being to any of these places, but once they have they like them, also with arts and crafts, at her job they make them do them, even sometimes they dont want to but after they do some like them. If they can get more people to get involvve and go other places gangs members will probably follow and all of them will be going to betrter places and doing better things. Also dont do sports or anything this jsut sarts fights and all of those things with competion. But now since gangs are moving to aniother place all you can do is basically try to involve them in activities.

    Wow!
thats pretty trippy, be careful people in the I.E, watch your back.

Well as Hector has stated, there are a variety of gangs and the amount of gang member’s are growing, and you can`t really stop the number of members who are going to be in a gang. Like the article said, because when gang members are put into jail, more gang members come out, new gangs are formed because it seems to them new territory, for them to ‘GRAZE” on.

I feel it is a responsibility, to stop gangs before they get even worse. Many people have said that gangs start because the members have nothing else to do except cause mayhem. Find activities for them to do, and if they don`t consider taking another path, and going in the right direction, do whatever you can to get them off the street.

Being in a gang, and gangs in general I think are stupid and unnecessary. Why put your life on the line, to show that you have respect for another group of people, when those other people probably don`t give a damn about you? Gangs don`t solve anything, they just promote violence and cause hurt to families.

As, for budgets of gang members, I solely believe that their budget is based on who buys their drugs and how much they buy. Thats how gangs basically make money, as well as stealing and robing places.

But honestly, looking at the real picture what can you really do about gangs, there really is no highpoint where you have solved the issue. If you put them all in jail, jails will be packed; there won`t be enough room for every inmate, if you try to help them you might get hurt for trying to “step to them”and if you do nothing people get hurt through all the crime and violence gangs create.

    …um yea

Yes gangs moving to the Inland Empire is sad but its something i expected to happen. this is a very common problem thats started over here in SGV and LA. ive known for a long time it spreaded for example when i would go to hesperia to visit friends it was full of gang members over there. even riverside has their own gangs. its just a thing about a certain individual in a gang moving to another city and starting his set over there. none of this is new to me but yes there is something that should be done. although off the top of my head it seems impossible. i think the only thing we can do is just arrest them if caught doing something wrong and put them through anti gang programs and thats about it. there really is nothing you can do, for these guys/girls its either ride or die.

gangs are inevitable in any city you live in . no matter what area you live in there will always be gangs in America. The only way to crack down on gang activity is to stop the sale of drugs which fund the gangs. Also any other way to get rid of their funding. Raise the price of guns that might help. Have a better hold on where the guns we sell are going. check in with their owners. It would probably be better to have gangs for the neighborhood instead of outside huge gangs. The smaller they are the better.

I honestly cant say that I’m surprised that gangs are now moving to the IE. Just because the IE isn’t south central the “watts“ or even the “projects“ doesn’t mean that they aren’t going to have this issue. People need to realize that gangs aren’t only in what people would call the “ghetto.” Yes they maybe did begin there but the wont end there.

This article somewhat annoys me to an extreme. Gangs’ have been around for a very long time. This issues hasn’t just come up. Personally I grew up in the ruff side of town. I have had my share of hearing bullets so on and so forth and I remember thinking and I still do think will things ever change. What are we doing as people to improve this situation. It has been times where bullets have went off and it has taken law enforcement absurd amount of time to come to the seen. So I just think its funny that people are crying out for help when it comes knocking on there door. When other cities have been trying to think of ideas for decades.

But I do commend the IE for trying to bring the situation to the light before it becomes worse. People say that gangs start because people don’t have anything else to do. I agree then I disagree. New research shows that the people who have joined gangs wanted a title of being someone, to have fellow people around that they feel they mesh with. I personally don’t know why people join gangs.

One objective was to lock-up as many gang members as possible. Which is crazy. Local jails have a huge wall full of pictures of gang members, what gang they are apart of, and what illegal actives they have been apart of. Even if they have been tried of not. The police know. How do I know this? My cousins have been caught up in gangs and have served time and they tell us everything. So its not like they don’t know who to get. But how would this really help the community? Is it teaching them a lesson? Or jest letting them think “ oh, I will just haft to serve time and get out.” I have been told from people in gangs that they rather go to jail because they wont haft to pay rent and worry about food. In jail they will be given three meals, free meals and a place to sleep. Wouldn’t locking them up only benefit them.

Parents who have children in gangs don’t truly approve. Actually most of them doesn’t like the face that there daughter, son, granddaughter/ grandson etc. in the article it said that families were moving to try and better there families look on life. But they have found a way to join another gang or brought the activity to another location. I feel that if someone wants help they will get help. The IE can do everything from building more YMCA’s to awareness of the dangers in gangs. But if they aren’t willing to change and want to better themselves there truly isn’t anything they can do.

But to make sure the community is family safe they could begin neighborhood watch programs. This truly does help. Not only will the community know what’s going on but it will also do two things work with their local police department to help fix the situation instead of complaining and two it will take some of the burden off of the police department. Many people think this doesn’t help but it does. We have a neighborhood watch and its stopped a lot of things.

because gangs have been around for so long more then 2 decades i fell that it will take double the amount it took for gangs to be started to bring them to a hult. Rome wasnt built in a day but i belueve anything is possible. With alot of work it can be done.

Gangs are everywhere, that’s a common fact. No matter where you live, there will be gangs. I mean, Walnut has gangs, and Walnut is a relatively quite place, at least in the places I’ve been to. I don’t think there’s a real sure fire way to end gangs NOW. But you could always try to prevent kids from joining them. I think a big solution would be to start anti-gang programs to inform kids about the dangers of joining gangs. This way, we could prevent today’s children from joining gangs. Another great way to stop gangs, as Kodi said, is to crack down on drug sales. I’m sure many gangs are funded threw the selling of drugs. It doesn’t really help that we’ve got kids listening to rap songs talking about drugs and guns, and even top notch NBA players with gang affiliations. Don’t get me wrong, I love hip hop, but I think today’s youth take it the wrong way. Go ahead, listen to their music, but rappers don’t always do what they’re rapping about. To further explain my statement about gangsters in the NBA, Stephen Jackson, co-captain of the Golden State Warriors, everyone’s favorite Cinderella story, is a gang member. He has praying hands holding a gun, tattooed onto his chest. And he reps his gang hard. In pop culture, we really hold the gang leaders up high. We show them, SOMETIMES, as being cool, and living the life. Look at Tony Montana, many people look at him like he’s a hero. People love Scarface. People want to be like him. But he’s a gangster too. Personally, I think we just have to keep people in check. Keep our kids educated, and put them into an environment where they don’t have to resort to becoming gangsters.

this is a big problem. parents think that by moving, they can keep their kids out of gangs and/or trouble. i have the perfect example for this. lets just say that u have a rotten apple. if u put that rotten apple in a basket full of ripe apples, the rotten one isn’t going to turn ripe. Whats really gonna happen is the rotten apple will begin to rot the others. so in other words, a good enironment isnt going to change a person, which is probaly how gangs got into walnut or places like that. I dont think there will be a solution to gangs because its all up the person. they choose whether they want to bang or not.

its kind of sad seeing that when a city gets rid of one gang and another one just pops up in its place. citys try to do whatever they can to get rid of gang problems to make it safer for their families, mailny children. i do think that what citys are doing to get rid of gangs is effective but they just need to keep it up. cutting off fundings for gangs is hard but if the city can somehow find a way to do it, they should. by cutting off fundings and putting gangs members in jail or trying to help members get out of their gangs is a great way of getting rid of gangs and keeping them out.

parents and families in a whole think that just by moving their families away from the current gangs that they are going to be safe. yes, that may be true for a time but eventually if nothing is done to keep gangs from getting out of control and spreading it wont matter where they move.

Gangs moving in the I.E may seem surprising to some, but honestly this really didn’t just happen. Gangs have been in the I.E for a while. I think they shouldn’t just try to focus on gangs in the I.E but also the root of the gangs. Pretty much no matter where you go there is going to be gangs. I was raised in a somewhat decent part of Pomona, but even when I was growing up, there still was gangs around my block. Some people say a lot of kids join gangs because they didn’t have anything to do, but I do not agree with that statement 100%. I think a major reason why I never considered joining a gang is because I was raised the right way by my family. People in gangs have a different mind state when there raised in the gangs. When your in a gang you start off at a young age, and the kids usually join the gangs because they do not have anything else. The gang is like their family. I honestly think gangs are impossible to avoid. Gangs pretty much come from poverty. I think the only way you can fix the gang problem is to fix the poverty problem, which is impossible. Lets not just figure that since many of these kids are from the I.E that they have a stable family and also that they are not in poverty. Many of them see these gang members, from L.A, now staying in there city making money and see the relationship they have with one another. Many kids in the I.E do not have money or a stable family so they seek gangs for refuge. It attracts them. That is how many kids get trapped into the gang life. And once they get in the gang life its even harder to get them out. The cities should focus on the kids at younger ages and try there best to prevent the younger ones from joining. Like mentioned earlier it should be more clubs for younger kids with mentors, they should educate them and things of that nature. Many of these kids need guidance from someone, and a lot of times they find the wrong guidance. The cities should try there best to keep the kids out of trouble and to help them not have a need for a gangs. They also need to focus a lot on the gangs in L.A because that is the root of the problem. I think it will be impossible to get rid of gangs, but the cities can prevent many young people from joining.

Well all in all you are going to find gangs just about anywhere!! Some places stand out more than others and some places don’t. I truthfully would have to say be more careful of the ones that don’t stand out as much because that is where the gang members are most likely to do something if anything rather than those that put it out there. The ones that talk the most are the ones just trying to put a front, because nowadays there are many wannabes. As far as the migration though, it doesnt really matter that is most likely just the hotspot right now!! But if you are a “real” gang member believe me you wouldn’t move to a hotspot if cops are noticing, gang members are a lot smarter than we think they are. They also are usually more attentive to their surroundings and wouldn’t set themselves in any position to where they may get caught up.Really there is no solution to gangs!! Hey that’s some people’s interest and we can try helping them find other interests but if that is it than there is nothing we can do but wish them luck and just try to avoid them for our sake. That doesn’t mean you can’t be friends with them just don’t kick it with them too much and let yourself be influenced! I know from experience because I have friends that are in gangs and family members and have seen some things!! But it doesn’t mean I love them any less of frown on them I just pray for them and hope they grow out of it! And ill only spend time with them at major family or friend events and that’s about it. They also respect that I choose not to get in all that mess because that’s not me!! So it all works out!!!

i think that gangs are terrible and a HUGE waste of time. i think that people are shocked about gangs in the I.E. becasue they are used to hearing about gang violence in compton, long beach, so on and so forth, but im not surprised. gangs are always trying to find new territory, new ground, anything is fair game. i believe that no matter how hard we try that gangs are gonna be aroung forever, justcause thats the easy way out. for kids in ghetoos they think that no matter what they do, their lives will be the sam eos school is a waste of time. if you think about it not every place in the I.E. is nice, i go to fontana a lot becaus eof work and where i go it is very much like a ghetto and i am not surprised that gangs are moving in to sieze the opprtunity. i would love to see gangs stopped but thats a battle where we are on the losing side.

  14. 14 Lee Davis

Gangs are goin to be problems no matter what cause they are all about the money and respect. The only way to stop gangs is to get kids interested in other things that will make good money. There is no way all the gang members are going to be arrested. There has to be a way to let people see the real disadvantages to gangbangin. All the kids see is all the girls and money and they say I want that too. Some kids are not accepted at home so gangs dont have a problem, they will accept anybody as long as they have heart. I stay in fontana and the mexican gangs are everywhere its hard not to be noticed. I have to hang with others people like me or if Get caught up walking alone then I am going to have a serious problem. I mean its not easy avoiding gangs because they are every where. The biggest gang are the cops and they have the most power so they better get out and start expanding turf unless they want to have a field day in the streets. All the new gangs might not be serious cause they could just be young people tryin to prove something that are all talk and no action. There are gangs that are serious threats that what you should look for or those with major beef. The other type of gangs that should be looked after are the ones who are tryin to come up I mean the poor ones those are the ruthless ones that have nothin to lose.
